I've been there a few times too. A security type took exception when I set up my tripod and camera to take some photos near the plant. Domestic violence (baby daddies/mamas fighting over the kids), theft (tweakers), DUI's (the local drunks, of which there are likely many).

Beatty, NV is a quick 20 miles east of Stovepipe Wells. Stovepipe Wells is near the middle of Death Valley NP so Beatty is a yes answer to what the OP was asking about. Beatty is a motel / fuel / food stopover along US highway 95 heading north from Las Vegas so it has a few things in addition to a post office.
