**** this! I'm moving to Tennessee!
I'm gay and fairly conservative and I actually do think it's narrow minded. That said, I don't think people who disagree with me hate me. It seems like if someone disagrees with you these days, that means they hate you. I don't know where that kind of thinking came from, but it's very toxic.

Moderate Democrat - Moderate Republican - not much difference.

I have an 83 year old neighbor that never left the house without his Make America Great red ball cap.

He sure got a lot of grief for it but many gave him a pass due to his age and some even said this to his face.

He also put up a Trump sign and it is the only one that I know of... problem is the sign was stolen so many times he couldn't keep track...

The SF Bay Area is a lot of things but when it comes to Politics not so much.

However, I am also a traditionalist on some issues like the nature of family and marriages and so on. I consider myself a liberal, akin to to sort of mainstream leftist parties in many European countries.

However, on to the question, do you guys think California is outright intolerant to non-Liberal views? Is it as bad for Conservatives and we assume the deep South is for liberals?

The story about UCB and 'Free Speech' etc make one think. I am a Democrat but not on the far left - kind of a socialist-traditionalist. I think most liberals of my age (c.50) fall into that box. The younger generation seem to be 'extreme liberals' who reject all notions of normalcy that are grounded in eons of human experience and are universal across cultures etc.

Just some thoughts but would like your opinions.
My best friends are very conservative and voted for Trump, hate Hillary and regularly bash the Obamas - until I get really quiet, which is completely not my nature LOL. Then, they shut up, remembering that we don't agree on these issues, and we change the conversation and have a good time. We are all life-long CA residents.

UCB has always hosted fanatical leftist views, since way back in the 60's, which is as far back as I can remember. Universities are often that way. But, they don't represent the entire population of a state.

Anywhere you live, you will be around people who differ from your beliefs. I'm also a moderate democrat, and I just really dislike fanatics of any kind. I believe in peaceful demonstrations.

I also was married to a staunch Republican logger, and was a hippy-type when I married him - that was in WA.

I lived in TN and got along fine with everyone, and found people of like minds and many who were not, who I could enjoy a barbecue with.

So, honestly, it's up to you. I'll go so far as to say I'd never be comfortable in a KKK barbecue, so I do draw the line at some point. But, we'd all do much better to value each other, in spite of our differences, so that we can rationally come to compromises. That just makes us stronger.

So, no, I guess my answer is - the entire state does not work with one mind in CA. It's up to you to find happiness wherever you are, and wherever you are, you can probably find people who agree with you - but you'll be richer if you include friends/acquaintances who also disagree with you. It's my opinion that then you both grow.

Yeesh, I sound like Yoda LOL. I have spoken.

I lean slightly right- fiscal conservative. My wife abstains from politics but I think based on conversation she's slightly left, although we agree on many issues.

I moved to SD 13 years ago and I went from slight left to slight right. The Dems in CA just really made me uninterested in the party.

Now her friends....holy smokes. Mainly solid blue and a few far far left who think everyone else should support their laziness and their habits. Half of them are still depressed over the election and we are moving toward a year now. I can't even carry on normal conversations with them anymore and I'm outnumbered. We've instituted a no politic talk, which I hate, but its become so heated and awkward at times. Miss the good old days.

You add so much to the conversation. A hit at parties I'm sure. Anyone that doesn't capitalize Texas anything cannot be trusted.
