If you had a job that could transfer up here, it would be great, I don't think there are too many jobs available. We are retired & moved here & love it, it is a great place to retire to, if you have enough to live on.
Life is slower than the big population centers.

No More Snow is pontificating about Eureka again , apparently without ever having been there. If she ever actually CAME here she could see that my neighbors and I DO take care of our homes and most of what else she said was wrong also.

eureka1, if you don't mind, what can YOU tell me about Eureka (and maybe other areas of Humboldt County)?

So, it seems like Modoc County is THE cheapest California County ever to live in. Wow... Hot and remote...

Gee, I'm wondering what's the second cheapest California county...

Quick glance at Zillow home values and BLS unemployment rates, shows that the cheapest California county with a below CA average unemployment rate is......drum roll.......

Spoiler
Humboldt. 4.9% August 2017, $292,400 ZHVI

Interesting. I always thought that the cheapest county in California was either Del Norte, Modoc, Lassen, Siskiyou, Lake, or Imperial. Those are some of the cheapest I believe.

Notice I used the unemployment rate as a filter.

Del Norte: 6.9%
Modoc: 6.6%
Lassen: 5.9%
Siskiyou: 6.7%
Lake: 5.9%
Imperial: 24.9%

All higher than 5.1%, which is California's average.

If you REALLY want cheap California, go live in Trona and work at the plant, or at China Lake, or in Ridgecrest.

I'll keep those areas for relocation in the back of my head.

I've always loved the vast, open, rural, blazing hot desert anyway.

BTW, compared to more urbanized areas, just how dangerous do you think Trona is, with all of the regular occurrences of arson and vandalism and high meth problems?

Other areas/towns I can think of where one wants cheap California are:

Needles, Blythe, Mesa Verde, Ripley, East Blythe, Desert Center, Chiriaco Summit, Thermal, Mecca, Oasis, North Shore, Salton City, Bombay Beach, Desert Shores, Salton Sea Beach, Slab City, Niland, Palo Verde, Winterhaven, Heber, Barstow, Lenwood, Hinkley, Daggett, Yermo, Newberry Springs, Baker, Nipton, Vidal Junction, Kramer Junction, Nipton, Bluewater, Big River, Earp, Havasu Lake, Parker Dam, Rosamond, Inyokern, Boron, North Edwards, Mojave, California City, Shoshone, Tecopa, Death Valley Junction, Furnace Creek, and anywhere that's in the far North State (i.e., Alturas, Tulelake, Crescent City, Eureka, Clearlake, Susanville, Oroville, Orland, etc.)

Had to...

Pioneer Point (the furthest north section) is the best part of Trona.

I wouldn't leave my home for too long, and would want anything I cared about bolted down.
