California, rather Brown just passed a law in September that lowers the penalty for intentionally infecting someone with HIV from a felony to a misdemeanor. I think it’s a max of 8years now reduced to a max of 6 months ....

Read more here

What is going on California? Why would this ever pass? The reasons given were absurd! I’m shocked! This can’t be real.

Let's be honest about a few things here...

HIV isn't the only virus that can potentially kill a person. There are many others:

HPV can cause cervical cancers, anal cancers and oral cancers. There is also speculation by researchers at Johns Hopkins that it causes some breast and lung cancers as well.

Herpes Simplex virus has been known to cause encephalitis.

Herpes Virus 8 (HHV-8) causes tumors of the blood vessels (Kaposis Sarcoma)

HTLV is responsible for certain types of leukemia cancers.

EBV (mono) has led to lymphoma in many people.

Hepatitis B has been linked to orapharyngeal cancers.

YET.....None of these viruses are criminalized to the link that HIV is? Why not? It's not even a misdemeanor to infect someone with Hep B, mono, HTLV or HPV, and all of those viruses can potentially kill you too, so why just HIV?

Medically, it makes no sense.

The flu virus for some can be deadly too. HIV usually leads to fatal consequences without medical intervention. Then there is the cost involved in a cocktail of medications to suppress the virus and the possible side effects involved for the person taking the medications for who knows how long.....maybe the rest of the person's life...? It's not a virus that can be passed via casual contact either such as several you mentioned above.

So if I punch you in the face after you asked me if I was going to punch you in the face and I said I wouldn't it shouldn't be a crime because you didn't protect yourself?

You are right, lets make KNOWINGLY infecting someone with a deadly disease illegal and a heavy punishment attached. Better than saying: Hey man who cares, live with it.

This is turning into a very uncaring society except for those who .... don't care about others.
