I'm seeing this story everywhere and it just seems, I don't know, a bit odd.

If I got shot and didn't have a cell phone, I'd go to any open store or business to ask them to call 911. But just driving around stopping random cars? Odd.

I don't know what the cell phone coverage is like in Tehama County, so maybe a lot of people don't have cell phones.

It doesn't say much about us as a society that so many people didn't offer to help. It's amazing that she survived.

“I’m prior military,” Phommathep said from the hospital, where his family is recovering, his voice cracking. “I’ve been through combat. It’s just a little different when it’s your wife and kids and you can’t do anything about it.”

Man that is a shame. I can't believe someone would just bail on a bleeding person like that. If you're not going to render first aid, At least call it in and tell them to stay put so that first responders can find her.

GSW victims often just need a bystander to reassure them and calm them down. They are usually panicked and in shock (and covered in blood) and that can be upsetting for people that haven't ever witnessed trauma, let alone have any idea about triage.

But seriously people, if you ever do find yourself in this situation, at least be prepared to:

a) call 911 and request medical aid
b) remain calm - you can't help anyone if you freak out
c) calm down the victims - its not that hard. Ask their name, Tell them yours, and that they're gonna be okay (even if you don't think they are going to be okay), and that you will stay with them until the cavalry arrives
d) tourniquet and compression - google for instructional videos...these are basics of field medicine and lots of lives have been saved just with these two simple techniques that anyone can apply

e) bonus points if you can give CPR (if the victim is unconscious) and can give the 911 operator the approximate ages and genders of victims and a description of injuries

It's actually not a good idea to help people if you don't know what's going on and you're not trained. I actually got a lecture on this by a CHP officer once, when I stopped to help someone on the highway. He said you just never know if the situation might be dangerous - that you should just go somewhere safe and then call it in and let professionals take care of it.

Who knows what the truth is. We weren't there.

He probably gave you a lecture because you were blocking traffic and didn't pull off the roadway.

And yes, its dangerous to be in the road. Ask any chipmunk.

I’ve had conversations with people who say they will not try to help anyone because they’re afraid to get sued if something goes wrong.

We have become a society that files lawsuits at the drop of a hat, but there are Good Samaritan laws in most, if not all states. I would encourage someone who’s afraid to help look up the laws in your state. You’re likely protected.

Seems to be the CA culture. I noticed this as soon as I moved to this state.

This response shows you didn't comprehend what I said. If you care, you might want to read it again.
