I hope they don't require a fee on non plastic straws as well. I remember it was due to the plastic industry out cry that required fees on all non plastic alternatives.

But a waiter who serves a drink with an "unrequested straw" will face up to 6 month in county jail and a fine.
The illegal alien/convicted felon was allowed to walk by a JURY, not by the state. There will never be a law that makes distribution of plastic straws a criminal offense, so you can unwrap your head now

Nothing. Nothing funny at all.

That’s what I thought. Guess you just hit the wrong emoticon button then. Carry on.

This law sucks

Why not a straw deposit? Charge a $5 deposit for the use of a straw. When you return it for recycling, you get your $5 back. Any uncollected deposits can go to a clean up fund, or a fund to study the impact of straws on the sand flea population at the beaches.

Anyone who finds this law weird or unusual should go to Sacramento and watch the circus some time. If you can follow what is going on it is quite amusing. If you find people seemingly speaking gibberish and making no sense at all - do not worry. it is not you, that is just what some of them do. Just because a wacko bill gets introduced does not mean anything. Wacko bills get introduced all the time. Sometimes to make a point, sometimes because a legislator's staff got confused (or maybe high) and thought they were in a creative writing class at Berkeley (where the rule is the more bizarre, the better).

BTW. Plastic pollution is a problem in China, and India, and several other countries that are not California. And straws are a completely insignificant portion of that pollution. In fact, straws are completely insignificant period. Someone just got an insect in their rear end about straws for some reason and it has become a pet issue. Then extremists on the other side held it up as an example of stupidity, which made it even more important to their opponents. Suddenly some nutso's silly idea is getting national attention.

“Plastic has helped advance innovation in our society, but our infatuation with single-use convenience has led to disastrous consequences,” Brown wrote in a signing message.

California becomes the first state to restrict plastic straws at restaurants

Yet people still line up to release helium balloons into the air. Especially the mylar ones.
