I heard about that tax on the news. Didn't really give it much thought as to how much it would be but 15%?

Quote:
All cannabis legally sold in California now comes with a 15 percent excise tax. On its own, that rate is in line with, or below, the tax imposed in most other states that have legalized recreational cannabis.
I had no idea it was that high. I figured it would be about the same as sales tax on non grocery items. Wow.

We, as end users, indirectly pay the excise tax on alcohol so why would marijuana be any different?

I guess it wouldn't. I don't know what the excise tax is on liquor either. Surprised at 15%, though.

They shouldn’t complain, that’s not much at all, barely more than the sales tax. After all, the whole reason for legalizing it is tax revenue. Here in WA state, the tax on pot is 37%.

The price of legalization. So, if it's cheaper to buy it on the black market, go for it.

I don't mind paying it. Yesterday I went into the dispensary in Old Town. There was a door person who cordially greeted my wife and me, two friendly dogs hanging out and getting pets from people, nice, bright lights, clean countertops and floors, knowledgeable and friendly staff, loads of different flowers and concentrates I was free to look at at my leisure, etc.

Way better than meeting some person in some weird place and getting something that may or may not be trash and potentially contaminated with God knows what.

Yeah, I'll take the legal stuff any day, regardless of the higher price.
