In another thread someone mentioned that here in California most people start working at 10:00am and work till 6:30pm. I would like to know what you think about that. What has been your experience with work time hours.

What time do most people start work in your area?

What is a normal work time for your job?

What hours would you prefer to work?

Do you work overtime?

I work that exact schedule, 10AM to 6:30 although sometimes I might roll into the office later or earlier and sometimes I might leave later or earlier. If I work remotely from home, I will usually sign in at 8:30 AM and work until 5PM.

I prefer 10AM to 6:30 because here in San Diego the traffic is much lighter at this time. If it were true that most people keep these hours, then I would be working earlier to avoid traffic but that is not the case, the roads are clogged up from 7AM-9AM here in San Diego which to me means that people mostly keep 8-430 schedules.

I'm retired, so my "work day" starts whenever my eyes blink open.

However, my husband is still working, and the official start time at his office is 7:30 a.m.. He usually gets to work around 7 a.m. The official end time is 4:30 but my husband usually leaves the office between 5 and 6 pm. He does get every other Friday off though.

My daughter's official start time is 8:00 a.m. and ends at 5:30. She's often in the office later - at least once a week she's there past 7.

My son's official start time is 9 a.m. His official end time is 5:30 but he is almost always there until 6:00 or 6:30.

My son in law telecommutes most days but usually gets started around 8 a.m. and finishes up at 5. If he's working on a project with clients in another time zone, he will often have a few weeks where he'll have radically different hours (i.e., starting work at 6 am or at 6 pm!), depending on where the client and sub-contractors are located.

Aside from people who work in retail and for restaurants, you're the first person in the San Diego area that I've met with those hours. Sounds like a great schedule.

I work from home. My husband owns his business and tries to be there by 7am; the shop (it's an auto repair shop) opens at 7:30am. He officially closes at 5:30pm but is often kept waiting for customers to pick up their cars, so he may not leave until 6 or later.

Of course, he'd rather start later and be done earlier!

I like to sleep in

I will also add that I work in a multi-tenant/multi-floor office complex with people of various professions/companies, the parking lot is mostly cleared out by 6 PM. I am usually one of the last souls to clear out of my particular work place. If I leave at 5PM, it is so hard to get out of the parking lot let alone even getting onto the freeway

Me too-retired!

But when I did work it was 7:30 to 5:00 Tuesday thru Friday. Mrs5150 is a self employed attorney. She rolls in by 9:30 and usually leaves at 5:00. Tuesday-Thurs.

Am retired. So, being the chief, cook & bottle washer around here, my work day begins when I have had my 1st cup of coffee. Then it is time for breakfast. Cooked. Hubby does not eat cold cereal. We live in a rural area...no McDonald's or donut drive-thru.

I also work 10-6 and I like those hours for the same reasons. I live pretty close to my work but since I work right next to the State Capitol building, the surface streets get clogged during rush hour. Arriving and leaving a bit later helps alleviate that.

The only "downside" is that my friends never seem to remember when I get off work so they keep inviting me to stuff that starts at 6. And I miss happy hour most of the time.

.
I am also retired and start these days in the spa around daylight with a cup of coffee watching the hills and sky changing colors with the sunrise.
However when I was working my day started about 3:00 am (after an hour drive to work) finishing at 4:00 pm (with another hour drive home) Mon-Fri. Campo's a long way from town but all the extra overtime hours allowed me to retire 7 years ago at age 57 with no regrets. My scheduled work shift was 7:00 to 4:00 with a 1/2 hour lunch break.
