About 3 years ago wife and I decided to move to Houston, TX mainly for her to open a business and for us to afford a house in a good neighborhood. Now that these goals have been mostly accomplished, we have come to the decision that Texas is just not for us. We are planning our return back to Orange County in about a year or so.

I'm a little nervous because of the daunting task ahead and was looking to see how others have done it. I know everyone's situation is different but if I can learn some tips from other's experience, that would be helpful thanks.

Too late, but would you have been able to have rented out your CA home prior to your move to Houston?

Not because of cost of living, but to travel the world. We lived in the Midwest and Northeast as well as various places around the world, before moving back to California.

We left just before the crash of 2008, when housing prices were stratospheric, returned in 2013 and bought a house near the bottom of the market.

Wait for the new housing bubble to burst. Probably around, or a year or two after, the next economic downturn. Save your money, bide your time, and buy in low.

We moved to Vegas in 2001 and were back in San Diego within 6 months. I would have stayed, Momma didn't want too

I forgot to add we are doing it again. We bought a house in Northwest Arkansas and are keeping our San Diego home.

I know someone who bought in Reno, NV and moved back to Southern CA a year later. They did okay on the sale of their Reno home, and bought in Oceanside.

You may not be able to buy in your town of choice in CA, like my friends, but be happier than you have been in TX, and be able to find something you can afford. They're not totally in love with Oceanside, but can ride their bikes to the beach and not deal with snow, and have nice Socal weather, and are glad they moved back.

Welcome back.

I am moving out of California and am wondering, did you buy your house in Northwest Arkansas before moving?

Yes, we actually went through the grueling task of buying new and waiting for the house to be built, but when we moved we had someplace to live.

A neighbor and my son’s former boss (not my neighbor)moved to Idaho. They came back to our area after six months. It was an easy return for them. Factors: they didn’t sell their houses. They realized the weather was fairly harsh in Idaho. And our local politics match up with Idaho. So why bother with starting a new life in an area that offers no advantage to eastern CA?

Yes, come back home

My home is under contract. But if for some reason it does not sell, then I can see myself moving back to California.
