I've lived in southern CA my entire life, but don't really have the time&/or $ at times to travel far. I mostly go on day trips when I have free time. I've strolled/shopped at just about every shopping mall in southern CA within a 1 - 1.5 driving distance. I go to San Diego 1-2x's a year too. I love amusement parks & go to Disneyland & Universal Studios every 1-2 yrs & few times to Knott's Berry Farm.

WHERE else is there to go? I don't drink or party, that's NOT my scene. I'm NOT the hiking/camping/outdoorsy/water sports type either. I like certain museums & have really only gone lately to the Natural History Museum in L.A. & the La Brea Tar Pits. Went to the Museum of Tolerance & the Art Museum too long ago.

Please give me ideas on where to go. There have been many times I have a free day but am sitting up at home thinking about where to go.

One place I've never been, but always wanted to visit: Gardens

There's the Getty Villa:The Getty Villa | Visit the Getty

Santa Barbara has a decent art museum right on State Street. Hard to beat spending a weekend in SB and just hanging out downtown.

BTW, I couldn't stand the Museum of Tolerance. j/k, never been there.

The Norton Simon art museum in Pasadena is small but excellent, and then you can go out, leave your car and walk down Colorado Blvd. with its trendy shops and restaurants.

Other non-traditional museums: The Peterson Automotive Museum (4 floors of cool cars); The Nethercutt Collection (more historic cars) in Sylmar; The Museum of Death; The Museum of Jurassic Technology (a truly strange one); The Museum of Failure.

You can also get a few friends together and try some escape rooms like Evil Genius, TrapZone, or 60out.

Other ideas: Spend a day on Catalina Island. Drive up to the snow in Wrightwood or Big Bear to take the Palm Springs aerial tram up to Mt. San Jacinto. Go up to Solvang and see a Danish town. Visit the most realistic Mission while you're up there, La Purisima. Head to Fillmore and take one of the Fillmore & Western Train ride tours--either the scenic or the Murder Mystery tours Fillmore & Western Train Ride Adventures & Movie Productions FWRY.

Home - The Huntington Library, Art Collection, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino

Also, I like to hang out at Venice Beach and watch the people.

Since you mentioned museums, I know some great ones in the Greater Palm Springs Area (Coachella Valley).

I am not exactly sure what kind of certain museums you are into, but here are some:

Palm Springs
Palm Springs Air Museum
Palm Springs Art Museum

Desert Hot Springs
Cabot's Pueblo Museum

Rancho Mirage
Children's Discovery Museum

Palm Desert
Palm Springs Art Museum

La Quinta
La Quinta Museum

Indio
Coachella Valley History Museum

Mecca
Salton Sea History Museum

Not located in the Coachella Valley, but there is a museum (30 miles east of Indio) that is dedicated to General George S. Patton:

Chiriaco Summit
General George S. Patton Memorial Museum

There is also a Tolerance Education Center in Rancho Mirage. There are several more museums in the CV, but those are some great ones that I know and/or heard of.

Probably more places to visit than any other region in the world. I love to
take the Metrolink from the IE to LA with the $10 weekend pass and explore downtown, Hollywood, Santa Monica etc without putting up with traffic.

1)The Broad Musuem in downtown LA. Book free general admission tickets online.

2)Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights. One does not have to go to China to see something like this.

3)Visit Little Tokyo, Chinatown and the Last Bookstore in downtown LA.

4)Little India on Pioneer Blvd in Norwalk

5)Little Saigon in Westminster.

6)Visit the museums in Exposition Park. This is easily combined with a trip to downtown.

Also see this previous post for some more ideas.

Thanks a lot guys! I've heard of most of the places you've mentioned. Also, if it takes 3 or more hours' drive to get there 1-way, that's a little too far. I want more day trip things, so that's 6 hrs alone that will take up most of the day right there.

It looks like I've gone to all the places that have interested me enough to go. If I didn't go by now, it's because it didn't interest me enough I guess, ha!

If it's shopping malls, I've been to them all (within 2 hrs or less driving radius from me and some even farther than that when I'm on an actual vacation). Hearst Castle, heard of. I don't seem to care for most museums. It's got to be something I really like, which are natural history ones. Certain art ones bore me, I could care less about auto or air ones, but I've been to a few air ones because my fiance' likes them. I've even been to air shows.

Orange County - No one mentioned anything there really.

San Diego - I go there a couple times a year. There's a pretty good amount to do over there.

San Pedro - There was a place called Ports O'Call in the 80s that was booming with shops & restaurants. Now, I'm waiting for their revitalization that will be ready in 2020.

That Shoreline Village area in Long Beach needs to be updated and like 5 times bigger, but it's OK. I've been several or so times throughout the yrs. Queen Mary, been to since I was a child.

Ontario Mills Outlet Mall yes, for sure been to & there's a nice, outdoor mall about 10 minutes from it too (Victoria Gardens Mall) and an indoor mall (Montclair Mall) about 20 min from them.

Newport Beach and Laguna Beach area are nice and there's Fashion Island in NB.

Palm Springs area - Anything else there other than the Desert Hills Premium Outlets and the best Bristol Farms grocery store I've ever been to?

How about The River at Rancho Mirage? Or Downtown El Paseo in Palm Desert? Downtown Palm Springs? Any of the casinos (Agua Caliente, Fantasy Springs, Spotlight 29, etc.)?

Ever thought about visiting the Shields Date Garden in Indio? Or the Oasis Date Gardens out in nearby Thermal? Some of the best-tasting date shakes ever at either of these locations!

BTW, I wouldn't exactly say that the town of Cabazon (where the Desert Hills Premium Outlets are located) is considered to be within the Coachella Valley. If anything, it's essentially more or less a part of Banning.

Also, you can actually take a tour on the wind farms near Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs. It's actually quite a bit unique!

It's called the Palm Springs Windmill Tours:

I would include the Ronald Reagan library in Simi Valley. About a 2 hour drive for you but well worth it. There is also the Richard Nixon library, smaller but less than an hour drive.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Getty Library (different from the Getty Villa).

You could also take Metrolink down to San Juan Capistrano. There is a stop right next to the Mission. We did that and it's a great way to spend a day without fighting traffic.

Since you like amusement parks you could go to the Santa Monica Pier, but traffic and parking are a nightmare.
