Hi,I work as a full time employee in san francisco. My company recently said that they will let me go and i can collect unemployment.Later they asked if i could become a contractor(work part time) and receive 1099 form instead.
My question is if i become a contractor will i still be eligible for CA unemployment benefits.
how can i make the best of my situation?

thank you
DP

If you work as a 1099 person, you will have to pay double social security tax ( both employee & employer portions, so I would ask for more money.
If you are eligible to collect unemployment, then one of the questions on the bi monthly forms, is did you work & receive money, so if you are truthful & report your 1099 income, any unemployment benefit will be reduced by that amount. ( I think)

So you should verify this with the EDD.

I don't see why not, but the 1099 money will likely not be calculated into your benefits. I would check with the Edd to make sure & verify. Is there anyway you can stay on a a wage employee?

I think so. They want cut my hours by half basically. If i'm still a wage employee then maybe i would loose the weekly max unemployment benefit amount.

In certain circumstances you can. Say benefits pay 1600 a month and you 1099 and make 1200 unemployment will cover the difference if you qualify. If you make over the amount of unemployment benefits you won’t get the difference
