There are people all over this country living paycheck to paycheck. It isn't something exclusive to California. We just do it with better weather.

The hardest part of it all is preparing yourself emotionally when you leave, since most of us here will be leaving our friends and family behind. But you have to do what’s best for YOU and your family if you have children in order to have a better life and not struggle which is key.

Financial independence and being comfortable matters a lot, and if one can barely make his or her own bills, is having a hard time surviving in general, you’re right, why stay and put up with that?

Also it’s expensive to pack up and move someplace else, especially if you have a ton of things. It’s even more pricey if you’re going to move out of state and far away states like say Texas.

Then the planning process, finding a job in the new city, finding a home, playing the waiting game is very difficult for the majority of residents that WISH that they could leave in a heartbeat.

I bet more people would move out if they could, but it’s honestly tough if you don’t have a plan nor a future in place for success.

The main reasons why I’m moving out of state is the obvious, but secondly, the high taxes, the politics and never ending increases in taxes.

I’m a Millennial as well, an older Millennial however and my views towards CA has changed a lot I just the past year. I used to be a hardcore Dem for years, but seeing how things have become increasingly hard to survive, the lack of true real wage growth, taxes that affects everyone, high gas prices, and honestly a future that is catering to ONLY the wealthy in CA has made me wonder if the politicians really want to help the “common man”, but instead they make policies and pass laws that hinder growth and make even more difficult for people to make ends meet.

I’m over it.
Good for you for understanding this while you're still fairly young. The fortunate thing for you is you have time on your side.

Even those cities you mentioned (they are very nice to live in BTW) and other cities you're still dealing with SoCal taxes, traffic and other BS. At the end of the day, it's all about quality of life and cost of living and one's ability to increase their quality of life should factor into where they live. If you factor in the rising rate of inflation it's going to get worse for alot of people since it affects the prices of goods and services.

I don't like going to the beach here anymore unless I have out of town visitors and there's way more traffic here than in previous years when I first moved here. Personally, I only want to be here about 2-3 more years anyway. In that amount of time, I'll either have enough savings, paid off enough debt to either move out of state, increase my earning potential here or work offshore. And that doesn't include selling my current home.

For those thinking they want to retire here California taxes pensions. That will be the reason I'll call another State my home base.

I agree with you. My beach town is full of middle-income white people who would be fine in flyover country. In fact, they'd probably change the politics of it for the better. We're a mixed-race family, so no way are we risking the kid's safety by moving into any of those racist hell-holes with guns everywhere and people so filled with hate, like my original hometown. It'd be like a Somali man in NYC moving his family back to Mogadishu. If we couldn't easily afford California, we'd go overseas, instead, where the white part of our family would be so in the (model) minority that we'd be seen as a curiosity instead of a threat, also no private gun ownership.

Gentrification is painful, but it's not something you can stop by whining about it.

Money is the one thing you have to be smart about or your going to end up on the street with all the other homeless. So yea the person living above their means here is dumber then the person doing well in another economically healthy state.

This is so true. It reminds me of someone I used to work with. Someone pretty irresponsible with money because her parents would bail her out when she got into a "cash flow" jam. After they died, the bank dried up but it didn't curb her spending. Not an uncommon problem among many. Makes me wonder, why wasn't money management taught to them by their parents or adult figure?

It’s not that much more affordable. Where I live it’s about as far as I want to be from OC and work. I make pretty good money and that’s why I stay here. For me to move would cost too much in liquidating and it would cost even if I used someone to manage. So I’m sort of stuck. Eventually I’ll need to make some exit as I get ready to retire but that depends on a lot of things. I may just buy a house elsewhere and keep my investments here. If I moved elsewhere I would be taking a 30% wave cut and bennies would be worse.

Sometimes moving is too scary for people.
