Anytime I'm outside of CA and I'm asked where I'm from, I always say California. Inside the state I say San Francisco - I never abbreviate my speech, but I do abbreviate when posting here. I can't recall ever hearing anyone call it 'Cali"?? Is that considered disrespectful?

Oh well - whatever blows your skirt up...

When we lived in Upstate NY, NYC was called the city.

This is sooo funny. I've lived in a few different states, originally from California. The only time I've actually heard anyone say "Cali" is when being playfully teased by my fellow co-workers about the Golden State! I definately find myself abbreviating the name to Cali when online. Majority of onliners do, and will continue to. Its a bit odd to be bothered by an Abbreviation. Would you rather just see "CA" . . .wait, thats the ultimate abbreviation, lol. Just teasing. I know I'm bothered by some pretty lame things myself.

In California San Francisco is referred to as The City, by some.. I suppose it is not derogatory,, but Frisco is.

As far as Cali,, the written English language is changing fast, primarily due to the internet and Text Messaging.. Sloppy shortcuts are common, I have to decipher emails from my son.

As a kid, I slept through all my English classes, but as an adult I realized that it is your use of the language and the state of your teeth that indicates your socio/economic class to others.

Cool Texas in not Cali or California, either

Texas is not Cali or California, either. It is Texas, and will always be Texas.
There is a Frisco, Texas.

I think what's irritating is that people seem to be oblivious to the fact that "Cali" is a real place name. It is a well-known city in Colombia. I guess to the geography-challenged, there is no confusion, but for the rest of us, it isn't necessarily clear that one is referring to someplace in the northern hemisphere when "Cali" is mentioned.
