I have lived in San Diego ( La Jolla and Poway ), Los Angeles, and Murrieta all in Southern California. Iin Northern California, I have lived in San Jose, Los Gatos, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, and Livermore.

I like all of the places we have lived except for Los Angeles. Our favorite cities are: Murrieta, Temecula, Livermore, and Los Gatos in that order though we do like the others. San Diego and San Jose are our favorite large cities. We like both for different reasons.

We have also spent a lot of time in many other areas of the state.

A few of these are cities I have previously lived in, but don't currently (that counts, right?): San Francisco, Pacifica, Burlingame, Half Moon Bay, South Lake Tahoe, Boulder Creek, Sutter Creek, Monterey, Morro Bay, Berkeley, Arcata, San Diego, and Burbank. Kinda random list, but mostly I'm a fan of the coastal towns and cooler weather.

I'd love to visit Eureka as well as the wine growing areas of the state. Heard Santa Cruz and Monterey. I haven't been to Northern California at all.

I have been to just about every part of the state (except the far NE corner) and I would have to say that as far as region goes, I definitely lean more towards Northern California since I just variety of cultures, landscapes, climates, food, etc.. all in one region. That being said Southern California has its charms - I love the Mexican influence, the weather (especially in San Diego), and the beaches.

As far as cities in each region go I would have to say my favorites for NorCal would be: Sacramento (it's charming), Santa Cruz (beautiful coastline), San Francisco (lots to do), Carmel (cute little town), and Felton (redwoods). SoCal on the other hand would be: San Diego (weather, beaches, and downtown), Palm Springs (mountains and mid-century architecture), and Pasadena (Rose Bowl, mountains, walkable for SoCal).

The state is so big and it really does have something for everyone, which is a good thing and a bad thing.
