Nobody wants to deal with snow! Except the folks who move to Idaho.

I'd guess that another reason for the popularity of Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon, besides the lack of severe winters, is that it's relatively easy to drive back from those states to California to visit friends/relatives/the beach etc.

yes I agree. Phoenix is 5 hours from Orange County, Vegas 41/2 with no traffic. Flying is about 1/2 hour. Can't beat that. It's one of the main reasons I'm moving to Az....

Uh, yes you can. Don't move in the first place. No way I'm leaving San Diego.

Lot of my Bay Area friends, ex-classmates and ex-colleagues that have left, left for the following: Washington DC, Seattle, Portland, Austin, Las Vegas, Boise, Denver, Chicago, and New York.

All that original list shows is that generally speaking, people aren't very adventurous. If I was going to move, I'd head for unique destinations in the U.S.A.; like Maine or Wyoming, even Vermont. You don't hear much about Californians moving to those places. I mean who wants to move to a place like the place you just left, considering everyone else is moving there, too?

I think the real truth is most of these people only move so that they can live in a detached house instead of an apartment, and would rather stay in California if they could afford a house there....

Very well could be the reason. Without demographics to show exactly what people are moving into after arriving at their new location, it's anyone's guess. But I'm apt to think you're right. It is nice to have a little room to stretch, even if it's just a 50x100 square foot lot. Personally, I'd love to have over a hundred acres and then build a house right dead center. Keeps the neighbors at bay.

Not in a place where it snows, though.

Our friend, a native of Idaho, says he and other locals find it very amusing when folks from warmer states (California...) move in and build their house way back from the street with a 100-foot driveway.

There's a reason people in snowy climes put their house and garage next to the street.

They already do. Moved from Santa Clara in 2014 to the Phoenix metro area. Been visiting the Phoenix board here since before I moved and when CA comes up, it's rarely positive. They already hate us. Personally I can't stand how guns-trucks-football-and-jesus red this place is, so it goes both ways.

I moved because even though I'm in software development, I can't justify spending so much money for the same wood, dirt, and stucco as anywhere else. Visit any other board: don't kid yourself about it not being a sunshine tax when a lot of what you see on other boards is weather gripes. So I moved because it's WAY cheaper here. Similar salary, 1/3 -1/4 the cost of living. Win. Plus it looks similar enough to CA that it wasn't a big change - most of the stores are the same. It looks like home here (flora aside). The heat in summer is a non issue for me; I'm made for hot weather. I can't stand being cold. The winter here is the same as the winter in the bay area and that's already too cold for me.

So anyway, they already do hate CA. And it's not just the AZ natives; I've seen CA hate come from people from lots of states that have moved here (and yet, they've never been to or lived in CA).

That would be really difficult to live with.
