I work in aerospace with many millennials. Literally everyone I've spoken with (minus maybe a handful) wants to leave CA. Those who own homes don't plan on retiring here and those who don't want transfers.

I know a lot of people that want to leave California. I'm not ruling it out myself. What's holding the ones that stay back? The lack of jobs in the right wing utopias.

So-o-o-o-o-o-o-o..........., they prefer to come back to high taxes, high crime, stupid policies, and ridiculous regulations?? To each their own, I guess.

My sister is not a right winger—- most Millennials aren’t right wingers. She can’t afford to own a home, but she does save 40% of her income each month and she and her husband can’t find anything with comparable pay in benefits in places they do want to live that are cheaper. Many of the other places with similar offerings are either nearly as expensive (Seattle) or have poor weather (Chicago), etc. Her quality of life is quite high right now, just without home ownership.

LOL Californians are all smug about it until they actually read the articles and see that Sacramento is the 3rd most "flocked to" city behind....Columbia SC.

Reps to the South!

I still don't understand why millennials would want to live in Suck-ramento unless they simply want cheap housing which doesn't matter since the pay sucks in the area for most jobs.

No real night life scene, no real foodie scene, dirty dingy unattractive city.

Sacramento, like everywhere else, has nice parts and bad parts. It's obviously not as desirable as LA or OC for most young people, but when you factor in cost of living and quality of life, Sacramento may come out ahead.

Not necessarily true. Orange County is notorious for its low wages relative to cost of living (aka sunshine tax). You are likely to do better, financially, in Sacramento, assuming you are able to find a suitable job for your career.

Orange county is fantastic if you have significant wealth, and can comfortably afford a home there, but for someone young and/or working for a living, there are better places to live insofar as quality of life is concerned.

That's interesting. I am a millennial and friends with a lot of millennials and they all want to stay in CA. I wonder whose anecdote is less worthless.

As am I. Depends on the industry you're in and your location, I suppose.

Edit-I see you're in SF. You work in the tech industry (or some industry that pays exceptionally well)? I'd be shocked if you didn't know more than a few millennials who want to leave the bay area.

Survey claims half of Bay Area residents plan to leave California

Four of the states where millennials are moving in the largest numbers (Texas, North Carolina, Colorado and Florida) are also states which have some of fastest-growing economies. These states are home to some of the biggest boomtowns in the country.
