At one time it was a all day, 8 hour class. I took the hunter safety class, approx. 40 years ago at the Chabot Gun Club in Castro Valley, CA. Never went hunting though. I am in CA DFG system and hence able to order a hunting license online. (currently have one)

Nice scam. For $24.95....? The govm’t always uses round figures like $25. I hope this outfit also throws in a set of ginzu knives for that price

All these Govt fees are a scam but this one is legit. Many on Calguns went through it and bought a hunting license.

I took a legit gun course. Was $80, not $79.95. You’ve been scammed. Plus if I wanted a hunting or fishing license I’d just buy one.

I'm pretty sure that wasn't during covid? No one was teaching hunter safety. Hell, I used to. You must have the hunters safety card to get a hunting license. You do know that right? This is not a hunting license. My wife just got hers two years ago like we used to. No one is teaching the classes right now due to covid. Same as any class, online only.

They can offer it online for this so apparently, the ones being scammed are you and I and everyone else paying that ridiculous fee. Here is where it started.

I just took the WA online hunter safety course and liked it.
Heck I didn’t even need to take it but took it as a refresher during the shelter in place thing.
It took like 2 days.
Cost 20 bucks and was well worth it.
It is good for a CA hunting license.
I would absolutely recommend this class.
If I had one complaint it would be that it is geared for slow readers (possibly youths) and you had to wait for the timer to expire to move on to the next question or situation.

There's a link to it right on the state's fish and wildlife page:

It is a opportunity to be able to take the class in the comfort of your own home, for a reasonable fee. Although, I think it does not take the place of the experience of taking the course in traditional classroom setting, like I did so long ago.

I agree that hands on is better than online.
As I earlier mentioned I just took the online course several weeks ago.

It actually came in two parts.
The first part was to get the hunter safety course certificate but to actually get your license you need to complete a field day.
If you are over 9 years old you can do a virtual field day online.
The virtual part of the class only takes a few hours.
It takes you to about 5 different stations.
You actually get to see actors handle things properly and improperly.
You have to spot good judgments and bad judgments.

I haven’t hunted above water in years and this class I think will definitely make me a better/safer hunter.

Oh yeah BTW, it was $19.99 and like $21.70 or so out the door with tax.
I wouldn’t call it a scam but rather a bean counter with a “great marketing idea” that doesn’t quite understand how insulting that is to most of us.
