I'm almost through with the hiring process for a job/promotion at China Lake. I'll probably be there 3 years or until I retire. I won't stay there but I'm looking forward to it. I have friends in Riverside with horses. I think there's a stable at the base so I might relay my horse from Kentucky. (My dogs and horse may end up hating me) I'm in CT at the moment. Ready to leave. Hope my house sells fast!

Just the general feel of the place. The few threads that discuss Ridgecrest are pretty old. Do you live there?

I do not, but I do know about the surrounding areas to the south/west if you have any questions.

You have horses so it sounds like you are a little bit of an outdoorsy type? You should like it. Great area to be located in for someone who likes to hike, camp, ride dirt bikes, etc...

Your biggest nearby cities will be Lancaster/Palmdale to the south and Bakersfield to the west. Both areas have all of the box stores you would need like Costcos, Best Buys and Walmarts. Ridgecrest also has a Walmart though.

You have some great national parks to the north and east. There’s also a lake/reservoir directly west called Lake Isabella which leads to the Kern River and Kernville. Great area for water recreation and white water rafting.

Oh that's a great summary! I'm encouraged by the fact there's water in the vicinity!

I think there's a stable on base but I can't find much about it.

Yea Lake Isabella is about an hour away to the west. You can head north from there up the Kern River if you prefer the river. Kernville is a great little town for weekend getaways/tourism type stuff.

I would ring up the base for the stable info.

It's extremely hot there in the summer, with relentless, shadeless sun burn. You won't be having much fun outside, except the early mornings and late nights. Its what 50 miles or less from Death Valley, the hottest spot on Earth!
