For those who like to crow and boast about California having "the 5th largest economy in the world", you do realize that that's a bit of a mirage?

The statement about the economy is kind of misleading since ≈1.5 tril of that value comes from just two companies: Apple and Facebook. They are high value companies that otherwise don't really provide a whole lot in terms of jobs, goods, and services. Not in the overall grand scheme of things.

Take those two companies out of the equation and CA's TRUE standing absolutely nosedives.

Just some food for thought....

They aren't going to move, so quit fantasizing!

Gently pull your hand up, remove it from your lap, zip up your pants and move on!

I’m sorry, but you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. When they talk about California being the fifth largest economy if it were a country, they’re going off GDP (gross domestic product), or in California’s case GSP (gross state product).

I’ll spare you the economics lecture, but in simplest terms the GDP is the sum of all goods and services produced in said country/state. Now you can argue that GDP isn’t the best way to measure an economy (there’s many flaws, nominal vs real, etc), but to factor in/out a company’s valuation has nothing to do with it. Case in point, Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile). They’re headquartered in Germany, but everything they do in California counts towards California’s economy.

Like the previous poster said it doesn’t matter anyways, Apple isn’t going anywhere. If they’re to fall off the face of the earth like they did years ago before rising from the dead, someone else will be right there, it’s always been the case. Why not use Wells Fargo, or Alphabet (Google), Intel, Chevron, Disney, Cisco, etc, to make your point saying they if they moved out California’s economy wouldn’t be what it is, it’s kinda the same thing.

Pretty much any other time, I'm calling BS.

It takes an hour just to get from Bakersfield to Castaic. And Castaic is how far and long from Santa Monica via the 5 and 405?

No way it could be done in under an hour during daylight times. No freaking way. Not in 2018. Twenty years ago, perhaps. But not now.
Totally concur! It takes 45 minutes JUST to go over the Grapevine, muchness through the SCV and SFV areas. You have to go over the Grapevine, over the Newhall Pass, over the Sepulveda Pass, and then through WLA.

As far as California having the world's 5th largest economy, keep in mind that decades ago, long BEFORE the entire internetz and all of its value producing companies, California was routinely described as having the world's 6th largest economy.

Mountains, being close to LA, and being able to easily take the Metro to the beach without driving. I live IE and love having all the options nearby. You don’t have to live right at the beach to enjoy it. Not the case in AZ.

Hmmm.

Bakersfield to Castaic is an hour. Castaic to Santa Monica is an hour.

If you leave at the right time you can get there in two hours or a little less if you aren’t a slow poke. 2 am would be an exaggeration.
