Can anyone tell me how ridgecrest,ca is? I read that it is a conservative town? Reason why im asking is because i have a job offer with military contracting company starting off making 36$ an hour. Im single so i dont have to worry about moving a family like other people.

Well, looking on the bright side, if you like to hike, you're fairly close to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. Also Lake Isabella is just over an hour away. Sorry, that's all I got.

I imagine I'm not the only one who does this, but if I want to explore a place hundreds or thousands of miles away, I go to google maps, grab the little orange guy from the bottom right corner and drop him off in various places around town.
That gives you a sense of what to expect before you get there.

No one is going to mistake Ridgecrest for Santa Barbara, but if you don't mind sort of isolated desert living, you'll be fine.
But, if you're like most single people, you're going to want a bit more life than a town like that can offer.

I'd pick Palmdale over Ridgecrest for the simple fact that you're an hour and a half to the beach in Ventura and just over an hour to Pasadena and the L.A. Basin. A lot more interesting things to do on the weekend, unless you're the solitary type who likes to disappear into the woods.
Palmdale is certainly nothing to write home about either, but it gets you a lot closer to something more quintessentially "California".

Why don't you visit the place?

It's rather deserty and somewhat isolated. They do have a nice hospital there. You are closer to Bishop (2 hours) and Mammoth (3 hours) if you like fishing and skiiing...

If the job is in Ridgecrest, you definitely do not want to commute. I thought you were asking about Palmdale because you had an option of working in that town too.
Work as close as possible to your job.

I've got a friend who lived there and worked for the military at China Lake. The ratio of guys to gals is pretty low. He's a young single guy. They joke about it being a sausage fest - lots of testosterone. Don't expect to be finding many female dates while there if you're a guy. If female and single, its a different story.

Still, do what snort said and drive the neighborhoods on Google. Are you ok with small towns in the middle of desert like hot locations? You will be able to drive to the mountains, go dirt biking, etc...

What are you looking for and what do you like to do?

Here a post describing it more:
