You should plan on staying in Needles in September. Last time I did that the low was 93*. Oh and Barstow is worth a 2 day stay.
San Bernidino is also quite lovely. Basically what I’m saying if you want to experience the worst of CA, do visit those towns. Driving thru the LA area to get to Santa Monica will be a test of patience. Unless you plan to do it at 3AM figure an average top speed of 25mpg. IF you plan to loop back to the Bay Area, I would suggest Blowing through Barstow and spending a night in Bakersfield then head north

We live here (SF Bay Area), and we get down to Pasadena where my brother lives, and to Carlsbad where a friend lives, a few times a year. So yeah we’ll probably blast from Needles to Santa Monica at the end, but we’ll do some classic Route 66 things down there. I need to find the best ones down there.

San Bernidino is also quite lovely. Basically what I’m saying if you want to experience the worst of CA, do visit those towns. Driving thru the LA area to get to Santa Monica will be a test of patience. Unless you plan to do it at 3AM figure an average top speed of 25mpg. IF you plan to loop back to the Bay Area, I would suggest Blowing through Barstow and spending a night in Bakersfield then head north
