Anyways, I actually did a last minute switcheroo on my Prop 10 vote and decided to go with Yes. I wouldn't necessarily vote for a poorly crafted measure in my local region but I can get behind letting localities decide.
Yes but the probably is in CA increasingly many of these localities are run by socialist nutjobs ..

A vacancy tax is on the Oakland ballot that is capped at 6k per property...

I find it unbelievable but true...

So, what if I have a lot I bought with the plans of building my home and am actively saving towards this goal... now it could cost me an extra $60,000 if it takes 10 years to achieve.

Or the family that is transferred a year overseas... as several I have known... they call Oakland home but will be away a year?

Sometimes... it really helps to have a Statewide level playing field as opposed to hundreds of different laws in flux.

Even in places like Tahoe there is a move to ban rentals... even those Grandfathered and registered...

Maybe it is just a California thing?

And the voters played it smart, and defeated Prop 10.

Yeah but it seems likely they’ll keep pushing it .

Newsom was supposedly no on 10 but the unions and special interests will likely put pressure on him .

We should abolish rent control and have a restart .

Just looked it up . This is a horrible idea .thry want to see how they can “use” people’s private property .
That is a scary thing .. sounds like socialism or communism to me

This is a misguided “solution “ to the homeless and affordability issues in CA .

Even if all the vacant properties went available today , prices still would be high in desirable areas . Also many of the homeless are homeless due to mental health and drug alcohol issues .

It’s just strange people think this way of increasing taxes and regulation going to help things

“There's a lot of vacant properties that haven’t been used for years,” said Elder, as she pointed to a fenced, empty parcel next to the encampment she visited on a recent morning. “As a city and as a community, we need to take a look at these vacant public and private lands and see how we can use them.”

I am lifelong Oakland and so was my family going back... we stayed while others left.

Nothing has really shaken me as the local results of this election.

For the first time ever I am questioning my future here...

A $6,000 extra tax on a vacant lot or other property is something I just can't get my head around...

I'm civicly active and participate... spoken at council meetings that lasted into the morning... volunteer and adopted storm drains near my home and pick up trash dumped in a local creek and self haul it out...

I have the best neighbors... a very diverse group and all that I call friends.... the neighborhood kids come to my house to pump of their tires... I put an air hose out for all to use... another neighbor put out a basketball hoop...

That said... I can't live somewhere and have the rug pulled from under me...

I believe with the passage of the latest ballot measures Oakland now has the highest taxes in the State...

That's awful..I'm sorry to hear it---I bet your neighbors think highly of you as well- we NEED more folks like you and yours.... and really, to me it isn't strictly how much we're being taxed, it's how the money is being spent...it would be OK if things got better instead of worse but - the money just seems to be going for salaries and also benefits for folks that have and will never earn one penny on their own or get to be massively subsidized.
AND we apparently keep voting for more and more and more of the same!!! HUH???

It is the disconnect between those voting those paying...

It's a shame because Oakland really does have a lot to offer and natural beauty with a rich history...
