Most people living in California would notice that the California plate has not been updated much since they 1996 when they made the plate glossy white and have a cursive instead of a print State banner. Many states update every decade or decade and half or so. Though not every new plate looks nice, for example New York's Yellow post 2010 plates gained a lot of criticism by those living in that state. Makes me curious why they had to change plates so soon as the previous NY plate design was released in 2001 and looked better. The statue of liberty plates prior to that lasted for 15 years from 1985-2000.

Though if you travel around California these days since 2015 its impossible to not notice that more and more California plates are of the black throwback 1960s variety.

So What do you guys think of the new plates?
When if ever you think would they complete the switchover to the "new" plates? I remember it took about four years before the cursive bright background plates completely replaced the old print ones for new plates back in the 1990s.

Would you be happy with the state scrapping the 20 year old give or take white plates in favor of the vintage black plates completely?

The vintage black plates currently cost $50 to get and an additional $40 a year, every year on top of your regular registration renewal.

I've seen a few around, but that's a chuck of extra money to a lot of people.

There's no way the state would scrap the white plates (which have a one-time fee) and lose out on all the extra money coming in from the vintage plates.

I see the black plates all the time. Most are personalized, because if you're going to spring for a special plate you might as well get it customized while you're at all.

I really like them and wouldn't mind if all plates were black, but I doubt they will ever do that. Plus, they are nostalgic for me because I recall the black plates being around when I was tiny, but gradually disappearing.

Interestingly as the state is way overdue for a new plate design. It appears the black plates come just in time. Though I guess people who want these plates now better be pro taxes based on the other poster's mention of paying an extra fee annually in addition to the fee to renew the car's registration?

Though I really hope this https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/tr...211828814.html does not become our new standard issue license plates in the near future, or that it never becomes mandatory. These are digital license plates to track drivers every move. Its only good in the ones in a blue moon chance that the car is stolen. Otherwise who knows what the government or private firms are going to do with them.

As a plate collector, yes I know it's a dumb hobby but it's fun. As a collector these plates are considered "iconic", maybe the locals don't think so but they are. CA should go back to these or at least make all vintage plates available.

Alabama had fairly nice license plates when I lived there (2016), but man.....the black and gold plates here look amazing. So simple, yet amazing. Unfortunately, it's not the standard license plate.

I normally see the black plates on luxury vehicles there are some that aren't but I normally associate it with luxury vehicles. It almost looks weird when I see a Rolls or Bentley with a typical white license plate or any vehicle more than 100k. I like them though!

Back in the day . . . CA used to switch every few years from yellow plates with blue/black lettering, (can't remember exactly which letter color), to black plates with yellow lettering. That went on for decades. Then they introduced the blue plates, to eventually be replaced by the white plates. I like the white plates because they are reflectorized and greatly enhance visibility. I'm all for greater visibility and the resultant less accidents.
