Summertime in Bakersfield is hot,but Phoenix and Las Vegas is worst with their longer days of 100+ heat, and Bakersfield at times gets some relief from the heat when cooler marine air filters in.

Phoenix is more of an economic powerhouse and is much larger than either Fresno or Bakersfield, but Fresno and Bakersfield are closer to the Beaches,National Parks such as Yosemite,Kings and Sequoia, and Fresno is closer to The Bay Area, while Bakersfield is closer to L.A....You basically have closer access to a greater variety of things to see and do around the state if your living in Fresno or Bakersfield, while Phoenix is way out there.

Phoenix heat is also intense and summers there can get humid when the monsoon season arrives.

Phoenix is better than both Fresno and Bakersfield IMO.

How Many Days of Significant Daily/Nightly Cooling 64F and Below?

May to Sept 2018 (Summer months)

Austin, Texas - 1 day
Phoenix - 4 days
Las Vegas - 9 days
Bakersfield - 48 days
Modesto, CA - 112 days

Portland - 143 days
Sacramento - 143 days
Seattle - 148 days
San Francisco - 153 days

During the Summer months, there are only a handful of major metros in the nation that have very Cool temps in the evening, night, and for a significant part of daytime A.M. hours. Those metros include SF Bay Area, Seattle, Portland, Denver, and SACRAMENTO.

Most people don't that Sacramento and much of the Sacramento Valley is in a different climate zone than Bakersfield. A good example of this is precipitation:

Rain to date this season: Feb 2, 2019
Sacramento: 11.19 inches
Bakersfield: 3.21 inches

Average Yearly Total
Sacramento: 20 inches
Bakersfield: 7 inches

I feel like Phoenix also has some cool stuff nearby to go see and do (Sedona, Grand Canyon etc..)

But regarding other nearby big cities/attractions, Bako is really situated nicely. You can get to LA in under 2 hours typically. You also have SF, Oakland, San Diego, Vegas, Anaheim, San Jose, etc...all within 4 hours (mostly less). Phoenix only has Vegas nearby, and even that’s 4.5 hours.

Bakersfield is hot, but Phoenix and Vegas are a different level.

That being said, Bako still made it just outside of the top 10, lol..

It’s interesting that Sac and Bako have the same all time high at 115.

Spin it however you want. The fact remians there isn’t a significant difference between the two in the summer, they’re both really hot during the day. You can debate what’s better at night, 61 or 71?

Average High-May, June, July, August
Sacramento 81, 88, 93, 92
Bakersfield 84, 91, 97, 96

Average Low-May, June, July, August
Sacramento 54, 58, 61, 61
Bakersfield 58, 64, 71, 69

Yea I was about to say, Sacramento’s weather is much more similar to Bakersfield’s regarding temperature than it is Seattle, SF or Portland.

Also, most Seattle people would gladly see that number cut in half if it meant they got another month of summer. Seattle has wonderful summers, unfortunately they are only two months long.

This is really a cultural thing even within CA since its such a large state - mountains, coast, valleys, deserts, SoCal, NorCal etc... People have different ideas of what 'optimal' conditions really are. For example, most SoCal folks love the heat and get cold very easily. They do not like the cooler summers of the Bay Area and think SF is freezing. Even though I grew in SoCal and have family in SD, we actually enjoy the cooler summers up here after living in Monterey for over a decade. We've totally acclimated to the climate, so the summer fog doesn't bother us. In fact, for the majority who live in the Bay Area the climate is prefect or close to it. But I know folks from SD who moved here for work and as soon as they retired moved back to SD. When I show them pictures of beach in the winter and its sunny and upper 50s they think that sounds 'freezing.' Same thing for folks from HI or FL when its in the 50s or low 60s - they start shivering immediately.

Spring, Summers and Fall are glorious in the PNW if you don't mind some rain and cooler temps on occasion. But it certainly not 'freezing' if wearing a light jacket. Compared to living in places like CO or the east coast the entire west coast is mild year round.

Given the choice of more heat during the summer months or cold during the winter, we prefer the later. But of course this varies person to person. That's why you see some from the Bay Area moving to Sacramento while others head for Seattle or Portland. No one place is best for everyone. I guess that also explains why some think they would like Bako more than Sacto. While we can describe the differences and why 'we' might like one over the other, someone else may not care about those same things. If you gotta live nearer SoCal then you're going to pick Bako every time.

Derek
