I'm about to buy a NEW car, 2019 model, and moving to California in a month for a new job. I will register my car in Oregon when I buy it, but do I have to register my car in CA once I move?

Do I have to pay tax once I register it in CA?

The short answer is yes and yes. If you move permanently to CA, you need to register the car in CA and pay tax & fees.

The long answer is in the link the above poster provided.

California dings you for the difference in sales tax of your particular area and where you bought it within one year of purchase.

For example, I bought a car in Greeley, CO in March 2014 and moved to Long Beach in October 2014. Despite being a full resident of CO (and at the time, not knowing I would move), CA DOES NOT cut any slack. They will get their money.

And if you don't register the car in CA, one of your lovely neighbors is likely to report you.

Any reason why you just couldn't wait a few weeks to buy the car? Then you wouldn't have to register the car twice. Just register once in CA.

Or lease it, then the tax won’t apply.
