They were famous songs. How about the Eagle, it’s Hotel California, not Hotel Cali.

No one is suggesting the name of the state be changed from California to ‘Cali’.

Some people use ‘Cali’ as a personal abbreviation (or slang) to reference it in informal settings. It doesn’t have anything to do with old song lyrics.

I call it Cali, because it doesn't deserve any more of my breath to breathe the additional syllables.

Yeah, that's what I said.

Yes I am under 40.

What is even offensive about this? I DON'T UNDERSTAND.

Well once someone uses the full name of something in a song, abbreviations and nicknames can NEVER be used again. Didn't you know?

Yep. Age/generation is a likely influence. I'm younger than you, but still old enough to buy into a retirement community.

I can appreciate LL Cool J's song, but I still don't call/refer to the state as 'Cali' (and I'm a native with pre Gold Rush roots).

Hotel California is in Mexico, where people say Baja or la baja.

It doesn’t matter where it is, but it’s not named Hotel Cali. Butactually if you google Don Henley said it’s abstract name stands for excess of America. In fact, they were suing the hotel for Encouraging people to believe the band has authorized its use, but the lawsuit was settled.

The term Cali does sound cool, but some people do actually get very annoyed when hearing the word Cali. I used to be Caliguy2007,but so many complaints got me annoyed,so I had to switch it to Californiaguy2007.

It seems some people don't want California associated with Colombia I think

Not really. It's more like annoying nicknames or misnomers like Frisco for SF, or Assault Rifle for AR,

Most people I know really dislike ‘Frisco’ for SF, including me - but I don’t hear it said that often; and when I do, it’s tourists. Slightly annoying, yes. Something I would ever tell someone to ‘stop’ in a thread? Nah.
