No, but same could be said about any state if you remove their top tier city/cities.

Well, I think the Bay Area I grew up in is one thing that contributed to CA's rating as the best state. Runaway success/economic boom since then has had its downsides. Maybe if we could turn back the clock...

Yep, OC was so much better when I grew up there.

careful not to turn the clock back to the dot-com bust

Yes California would be a great state with seashore, forest, desert, and mountains whether Los Angeles or San Fran existed. Arizona, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico do fine without a LA or SF, and those states don't even have coastline.

"Do fine"? What's your definition of "do fine"? What does NV offer, besides Reno and Las Vegas? NM is one of the poorest states in the Union, with among the lowest school scores. It's not like people are flocking to NM, and the only flocking they're doing to NV is to LV for jobs, mostly service-oriented.

The coastline (and mountains, forests) is one reason CA is so popular; the climate is much milder and more livable than in the states you mentioned. CA just happened to win the lottery geographically.

Frankly, what makes California the best state in the country for me personally has nothing at all to do with Los Angeles or San Francisco.

So, my answer is yes.

Yes. I don't go to either of those cities too often. For me, the natural landscape, the weather, and the overall lifestyle make this the place I want to be.

I don't know if any state is "the best" however. That's obviously a matter of opinion.

If they had never been developed and the largest cities were the inland ones and San Diego of course it would still be an amazing and beautiful state. With only like 12 million people in the same space it might arguably be better.
