However avoid living in Calexico. Their city council is very corrupt and their city has many places closing.

I was just in Redding yesterday and I can see now why no one talks about it. It's so poor and depressing; the only part that looked decent was the far northern part up in the hills. There were multiple groups of homeless people, 10 or 15 strong, sitting idly in the parks - this was on a 99-degree day, I can't even imagine living like that. The downtown also sucks; it doesn't have a single tall building and there was almost no one walking around even at midday.

But you visited the bridge, surely?

Thanks for the warning. How is the rest of Imperial County? I've been looking into the Inland Empire as a possible area to relocate to from the South.

Right not to mention the wear and tear on the car and all that gas. Unless they live relatively close to a park and ride transit station.

Imperial is a very nice city. Growing quickly but it still has a small town feel and local businesses. El Central is also growing, stay away from the eastern area around Adams. Anywhere else is nice. Bucklin park area, southwest high area. Homes are cheap and big. The mall is large and indoors during heatwaves. Brawleys western side has humongous trees. That area has super nice homes. Eastern Brawley was being developed until 2008 when the housing market crashed, but they are now beginning to redevelop. Throughout the valley there are lots of McMansions being built all across the valley. Its weird lol. Holtville is a cute town with nice homes and tight knot community events.

Thank you! We're already looking at homes to rent in the area. We'll probably end up buying something once we've been out there a year or so.

Even with the Coronavirus pandemic raging, homes and buildings are still being built in Imperial Valley, more than before it seems. Also, Imperial Avenue is getting ready to be extended to the south as well as a new interchange along I-8 and Imperial.

Given the OP is also asking about cheap property in the Salton Sea area ... um, pretty sure he’s not a candidate for Central coast property, eh?
