LOL these arm chair experts/haters are hilarious in their attempts to explain away how their states arent really moochers off of California.

Sorry but until your red state ponies up nearly half a trillion dollars a year into the the federal treasury, then I'll listen to any criticism, in the meantime Y-A-W-N-S.

But I'm just wasting some time at work so not time to validate.
Shhh, remember they think it is the "State" paying the money and not the people. it is the people paying the taxes.

This doesn't make sense since CA is not the most populated state.

BUT California is very much a RICH/POOR state with the 1% generally paying less than their fair share in taxes. It is really the middle class that pays the bulk of the taxes.

So I ran a few numbers simply dividing the 2018 Federal collections by 2018 population.

Here are a few states that are higher than California.....

District of Columbia 40,491,187 per person
Massachusets 17,095, 899 per person
New Jersey 15,600,114
New York 14,390,409
Ohio 12,052,860
Washington 11,996,949
Maryland 12,008,045
Connecticut 14,317,599
Nebraska 13,120,163
Delaware 19,684,491
Rhode Island 13,927,936
Illinois 12,651,114
California 11,541,710

I didn't do ALL the states, but it appears that the pattern is the states with LOTS of Federal, State and Local employees tend to pay the highest Federal taxes. Which makes sense, since "wage slaves" have very few deductions and most government wages are higher than the private sector (full disclosure...in many cases this is due to governments hiring more educated and skilled employees than the private sector)......this can be a good or bad thing depending on your views.

I lived in California during the "golden years in the 1960's and 70's. It received MANY, MANY more dollars from the Federal government during the period of time than it paid in taxes.

The Federal spends money on defense, old people, and poor people. Really those are the bulk of Federal expenditures. California drove the military out of the state during the early 1990's, the bulk of the old people come from the middle class and California has been bleeding those for almost three decades now.

Outside of California, people don't hate the state. BUT we would like you to pay your fair share given how many wealthy people you have relative to the other states.
This site has a somewhat different take on per capita federal taxes paid by state:

Ah so it does make sense that CA generates the most tax revenue because it has the highest population. 10 million more than the next state. Not exactly something to toot ones horn about, but more like geographical luck.

This isn't necessarily true, though population helps. The top four follow that logic, but starting at #5 (Illinois) on this list, their rankings here start shifting. New Jersey is #6 on this list, but eleventh in population. Scrolling down, I'm going to point out Arizona because I'm more familiar with it. Colorado and Wisconsin top it in taxes paid, but Arizona has more people. Likewise, it's only two spots above Oklahoma though it's several spots higher in population ranking. DC is also on this list (under one million people) and pays more in taxes than states with a larger population. Those are a few examples, and I'm not really up for breaking down the full list.

So, population does help, but it also reflects average income in those states. If incomes are higher, more in taxes comes from those states.
