You might be able to get some good information if you call their courthouse/sheriff/police or chamber of commerce.

I know yreka has been advertising on the tv that they now have a casino.
Some years ago i saw the government donated a heavy weapons carrier to yreka law enforcement.
Greenhorn Park looks pretty nice. Might be some pretty good fishin' there.
The Klamath River isn't very far. Years ago i used to see forums where folks bought land by the Klamath River & lived off grid there by the river. Might be pretty good fishing.

Sometimes it gets pretty windy in that area.
It's HOT in the summer. They get some snow in the winter.
On trips, for many years we have driven by Yreka or stopped for gas. Never had a problem.
That's all i know about yreka.

Best of luck to you, pard.....

Have you already taken a look at the information about building codes and permits on the Yreka City website and Siskiyou County Building Department's website?

If not, those would be the place to start to get answers to your questions. Here are the links:

City of Yreka:

http://ci.yreka.ca.us/codes-1

Siskiyou County Building Department:

https://www.co.siskiyou.ca.us/building

If you don't see the answers to your questions, give the relevant building department a call.

If you're going to build, it never hurts to get friendly with the folks who will be approving your project.

Keep in mind that all new construction in California has to abide by state codes as well as local codes, so you should also familiarize yourself with statewide requirements before you get too far into planning your new home. Here's a link to the statewide info: https://www.dgs.ca.gov/BSC

Of course, if you'll be hiring a contractor to do the work, they should be fully up-to-date with what is required under both local and statewide building laws and codes. But it doesn't hurt to familiarize yourself with them to avoid extra costs.

We stop there overnight whenever driving to Tahoe or the Bay Area, and stay at the Miner’s Inn Motel. We have found a great restaurant with live entertainment, Jefferson’s Roadhouse. They also have a Black Bear Diner, one of the better chains for breakfast or lunch. When we have been there in summer, it’s been what I consider to be unbearably hot, 108-113, and that was even 2-3 years ago. It averages 92 in summer. There is also the fire danger to consider. Other than that, it’s a beautiful area and one of the most affordable cities in CA.

I really like Yreka - the hotels are nice, the downtown has seemed pretty quiet and safe every time I have been there, and the scenery around the city is lovely.

Things I don't like:

- They've mistreated the local railroad horribly - ripping up all the track to the "industrial" part of town. It was a really stupid move, and never should have happened.

- Awareness of the volcanic threat seems to be close to zero. I've been told by townies that Shasta "can't erupt when there's snow on it" and "an eruption has never gotten that far anyway."

The biggest hazard from Shasta is not an eruption but a landslide (hot or cold). Much of the mountain has steam and water percolating through it, turning solid rock into something much less competent. There have been several big landslides in the past, mostly on the east/southeast side. There was also a mudslide a decade or so back caused by a melting glacier toe.

USGS has always listed the cities of Weed, Mt Shasta and McCloud more at risk of a possible eruptive hazard than Yreka and the threat of a massive eruption is pretty low.
