I don't think anyone expects all lines to be buried underground, but there may be some places where that would be advantageous.

Well, SCE handled our local wind event well, IMO. They only shut off power to the most remote hillside canyons, and kept the juice on for the cities and valley floors. It was not the unmitigated disaster I expected, and that we saw from PG&E. I guess Northern California's infrastructure just sucks. Not surprised since that's the more conservative area. Society up there seems pretty dysfunctional in every way.

Really? I thought it was more of a NIMBY liberal problem in the Bay area because they block development at every turn

Did the bay area lose power? Maps I saw showed the outages in the boonies, but maybe that's fake news.

Some areas did, some did not....

And yes, large areas in the boonies lost power.

Stupid Edison didn't cut off power. It will pay billions now.

SoCal Edison Transformer Line Under Scrutiny as Possible Cause of Destructive Saddleridge Fire.

Edison’s electrical system was “impacted” around the time that investigators suspect the Saddleridge fire ignited beneath the high-voltage transmission tower, according to the utility.

Bingo. A public utility must serve the interests of its ratepayers and it can't do that while being a for profit corporation with stockholders. PG&E was given a monopoly and then was poorly regulated. Money that should have gone to hardening the infrastructure was spent on shareholder dividends and executive perks. In fact, a couple hours before the PSPS PG&E execs held an exclusive dinner party in Napa County (https://kfbk.iheart.com/featured/sac...-power-outage/). What a way to show your utter disregard; the customers don't even exist for these guys.

PG&E should be broken up into competing non-profit entities and watched like a hawk.

PG&E is saying Cali has 10 more years of this yet to come. 5th largest economy in the world and yet they can't keep the power on. How pathetic.

It's not "Cali" that can't keep the power on, it's that PG&E didn't maintain their equipment because it might have hurt their "bottom line". This is a perfect example of why utilities should never be privatized.
