I bet a few people will now find out there's Milky Way...

On a clear night in 1994, an earthquake rumbled beneath Los Angeles and caused a city-wide power outage just before dawn. Startled awake, some residents who had stumbled outside called various emergency centers and a local observatory to report a mysterious cloud overhead.

That weird object turned out to be the band of the Milky Way, our home galaxy
, which had long been obscured from view by the city’s lights.

Our nights are getting brighter, and Earth is paying the price

One thing I hope these events don't spawn is a proliferation of "Lawn mower" generators that noisily run day and night...

Years ago campgrounds/marinas got serious on genset noise and it was welcome.

I do have a 25 year old Honda 5000... bought it for work... neighbor had it out after power out for 16 hours last go round... 4 extension cords running to my home and 3 neighbors... all going to refrigerators... not really necessary at 16 hours as I packed it with frozen bottles of water... a packed refrigerator/freezer will go the distance.

Nice to have a stay at home 95 year old neighbor on the job...

For long term it is hard to beat one of the $300 and change small chest frezer units... opening the lid does not let all the cold air out like it does with uprights.

The small LED lamps/lanterns work super... tremendous battery life on low settings.... plus doesn't every one have a shoe box of candles on the shelf?

Don't BBQ much but my 5 gallon propane can cook a lot of meals... plus... electricity went out but we still had hot water from the gas water heaters.

Is it really roughing it when you can still have a hot shower?

PS... When generator shopping my criteria is fuel consumption and noise and not overbuying on capacity that you pay for each time it used.

My take, as a current resident of Paradise, CA 95969, and a former resident of Fullerton, CA 92833 is this:

If a fire of this magnitude ever breaks out in San Diego, Orange County or Los Angeles, the number of the dead easily could be in the tens of thousands, or much, much higher.
The evacuation created a gridlock in Paradise on the 8th of November, 2018. Traffic was bumper to bumper, and not moving. I was in the middle of it, following my wife in her red Hyundai Kona.

When we lived in Southern California, that kind of gridlock was considered normal, a daily occurrence during rush hour. An evacuation prompted by fire or earthquake would turn that into a major catastrophe.

There were terrible, multiple fires throughout San Diego County in October 2007. I think it was 7 separate fires. I was living there then. One of the fires jumped the freeway in the middle of the urban area. I lived in the suburbs. From every direction of my house, I saw fire. The air was filled with smoke and ash. Schools closed, people couldn’t go to work. I knew people whose houses burned to the ground. I don’t remember how many people died, I believe some firefighters did die. I still remember those Santa Ana winds, it was hot as hell.

People very quickly forget...until it happens to them.

Why is PG&E catching more heat than the government here? Isn’t the government incharge of deforresting and Fire prevention? Hasn’t PG&E been trying to bury these lines for years but can’t because of bureaucracy, regulations, and environmental impact costs? Isn’t the entire reason they are shutting off power because the state keeps suing them for liability for the fires? We had above ground lines here in coastal South Carolina the power company buried 2,000 miles worth in a 2 year period, the permitting took them a few months for all of it because of our streamlining, my power stays on through hurricanes now.

Poor Nevada County (Grass Valley, Nevada City area) must be suffering economically. Electricity shut off last Wednesday and then again today possibly extending until Monday.

Yes, I lived in the IE Near the SDC line and saw the same thing. It can happen again and even be worse, though I hope not.

And we lived on the eastern edge of OC, in a fire danger area where the state refused to allow the completion of the toll road going south. We were always terrified that a wildfire could block us in since we only had one way out. We left, that was one of the reasons.

No, PG&E hasn't been trying to bury lines and no the Government is not in charge of deforestation. Many of the areas where fires have started are on private land or Federal BLM land. PG&E neglected maintenance, the Government played no part in their malfeasance. They already have a criminal conviction for the gas explosion in San Bruno caused by their failure to maintain their gas lines.

In case anyone doesn’t know about PG&E’s history, Hinkley Groundwater Contamination (a.k.a. Erin Brockovitch) ring a bell?

PG&E malfeasance and being sued isn’t a new thing ...
