A “rising tide” of California tenants have been getting preemptive, 60-day “notices to vacate” their apartments in advance of AB 1482, the state’s new rent cap law, as landlords take advantage of a window that closes Thursday to raise rents before the law kicks in on Jan. 1, tenants’ rights groups report.

Even though most tenants are paying their rent and obeying the rules, many have been told they need to move out by Christmas.

“We’re getting people who are long-term tenants, 10 or 11 years, suddenly getting the notice for no apparent reason,” said Dave Levy, programs specialist for the Fair Housing Council of Orange County. “ … That’s a blow around the holidays. Typically, we don’t see landlords handing out such notices at this time of year because it’s not a good time to re-rent those units.”

Nobody knows how many tenants have received such notices.

Yes, voters here will never get it. The poor get hurt by this and the gas tax. It’s the laborers who have to drive 100+ miles a day in their gas guzzling pickup trucks.

Oddly enough I meet and hear so many people who support rent control and feel sorry for the 80 year old who gets evicted from his/her apartment, but then voice that Prop 13 should be repealed like it’s ok to force an 80 year old homeowner to move.

Hard not to be bring politics into this. Republicans would never push these taxes. While I don’t support Trump or many Republicans at this point for my particular tax situation living in Ca, their tax cut did serve their purpose for most people in states that could support them in 2020.

It's their intention, collect as much money possible to stay in power disguised as feel good laws that really screw everyone over, mainly poors.

You should do a research before showing off your ignorance. Last year the only county (1) voted for rent control was Orange County which was a conservative county. The rest of state rejected it.
Why do people keep make everything politic instead of discussing the issue (pros and cons).

To clarify, California voters voted AGAINST rent control.

Governor Newsom ignored that vote and signed the bill for rent control.

Democrats have flunked one topic: Econ 101.
They just never understand common sense supply and demand.

Nobody is being evicted. They are however given legal notices of rent raises or termination of lease. Nothing illegal about that.
