The population of California was just about right around 1965, 18.58 million.

Exactly when I arrived (courtesy Uncle Sam). Nothing lacking in the state at that population level. Nothing has improved with the increase. Not a damned thing.

Yep, I had just graduated from HS the year before. CA was great than a true "Golden State". Now more of a Fools Gold State.
