I hate being taxed but I am ok with this.
Why should I have to pay your medical bills for your bad decisions ?
Taxes on tobacco products and alcohol are jokingly referred to here as SIN taxes.

The sentiment is pretty much the same as yours.

So have you been under a rock for the last 30 years? The Clinton administration changed the welfare rules so having babies while on aid does not change your $$$ amount and one is limited to 48 months of aid (with very few exceptions) CA abides by federal rules

In 2016 California voters passed Prop 56, which added $2.00 to every pack of cigarettes effective April 1, 2017. Interesting thread on it, below.

Odd that Texas is 25¢ more than California. I would have thought it would be higher due to the Puritans who run Texas, but Nevada makes more from all those casino rats despite its libertarian stances.

A step-uncle likes to make periodic trips from Toronto to the NYS side of the border to buy cigarettes and liquor. He complains about the price of the cartons--the highest taxed state in the U.S.--but he says that it's still cheaper to buy across the border than at home in Ontario.

I'm not a smoker, but I assume he must be staying overnight and buying from Duty Free?

Totally unscientific, but according to this site a package of Marlboro ( no idea how this compares to other brands, especially the one he may buy ) in Buffalo NY is $11 USD. In Toronto a package of Marlboro is $13 CAD.
$11 USD converts to $14.54 CAD, so in this case he would be paying more in Buffalo than Toronto. These are average prices, so take them with a grain of salt.

I don't know about now, but years ago folks used to order Native American brands of cigarettes from New York because they cost less.

Can't believe people pay that much.I make my own filter cigs for about 50 cents a pack since 2009 when Obama raised the tax on loose baccy by 2000% and created a new market for me.

You seem to be making the erroneous assumption that mj sales aren't taxed. They are, in 7 states, including CA. Other states likely will also tax. Legal sales are a new development, so states are catching up with all the details.

Next time, please research before you blurt.

Marijuana sales are legal and taxed in seven states. Most of these states tax the consumer purchase of marijuana (similar to a retail sales tax) but some tax the transaction between cultivators and distributors or retailers (similar to taxes on alcohol).
