The evidence of tectonic forces at work is strong with this map.

So much topography, coastlines, mountains, tight canyons, grand valleys and sunken deserts here, what a great map to represent it so well. It is what I love so much about living in this state since the early sixties and to this day live on a raised marine plateau adjacent wild, urban canyons just above the coast.

I grew up in the county that most of Yosemite National Park is in, the foothills of the Gold Country where a quick jaunt to it after school on a Friday was not an uncommon event with some of the grandest rock features in the planet to contemplate. The only county in the state I haven’t visited is Modoc in the far northeastern corner and even that high desert region has some topography. More than a few opportunities in this state to have your breath taken away by its rich geography.

The Sierra Nevada is massive in contrast to the coastal ranges like Big Sur, Los Padres National Forest etc.

I was born in San Francisco and lived there for all of my school years (late 1950s to early 1970s). My Dad worked near the Civic center, and he often visited a bunch of used book stores in that area after work. He rarely spent more than $1 or $2 on a book, usually just some pocket change. In roughly 1965, he walked home after work and carried a twin of that California 3D terrain map. Yes, he bought it in one of the used book stores for a couple of dollars. It was too big to carry on the trolley bus, so he had to walk the 1.5 miles or so. That map ended up on the bedroom wall in the room I shared with my brother. Thanks for the memories!

What a great map! I could get lost in there for hours.

I wish that everyone who comes on City-Data wanting to move to California thinking that there's nothing but San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, beaches, overpopulation, freeways, etc., would look at this map and digest it. This state is so much more than that.

I'm a third generation California and proud of it. Every time I consider moving out of state, I realize I'd probably have a nervous breakdown if I had to leave it! There's nothing else like it.

Thank you for posting it . . . made my day.
