Wear your mask!

At least one Republican blamed New Hampshire House of Representatives Dick Hinch’s death Wednesday on a culture pushed by anti-mask forces.

“I believe the peer pressure exerted by those in the Republican Party who refuse to take reasonable precautions is the ultimate cause of Speaker Hinch’s passing,” Republican Rep. William Marsh, a retired doctor, said in an email to the Associated Press.

What is your plan to eradicate COVID if you're so critical of a mask wearing policy? What medical expertise do you have in this space?

People have been told to wear masks for 9 months. Why would Biden think him saying it will make a difference? Fauci said Covid wasn't a big deal 10 months ago and only healthcare professionals needed to wear masks. Did they lie or was he just stupid? What medical expertise did Fauci have to make such statements?

Actually, many haven't been wearing them. And many followed our outgoing president's example.

Throughout the pandemic, Trump has disregarded the warnings of his own health experts and, saying he knew better, defied the science -- from holding campaign mega-rallies to touting an unproven drug, even suggesting injecting bleach as a treatment.

He has especially mocked wearing masks, continuing to do so despite promising he would -- and against the advice of public health officials that everyone should wear them to save thousands of lives.

There was a lot that wasn't known 10 months ago. At that time, there wasn't a general awareness of asymptomatic spread and mistakes were made. Fauci and others have long since corrected this, but please continue to spread non-current information here.

On the other hand, Trump continues to hold major events while discouraging mask wearing. Many people are influenced by what they see from his administration.

I agree that Biden's statements alone are unlikely to change these people's minds. Perhaps some additional level of enforcement will be needed. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

It’s laughable to think 70 million voters will bow down to dementia Joe and do what he decrees. I don’t think the dems have any idea what’s coming next year.

So far the transition team isn't providing very detailed information about their plan. Most of it is just boilerplate "deal with covid yadda-yadda" as should be expected but it does go beyond masks. Not all of it sounds terrible on paper but its far from earth shattering. For instance, he's calling for the CDC to create more evidence-based guidance for business and school closures but since those are largely up to state law and such guidance already exists to some degree, it comes off as empty.

About the only thing he's promising that makes sense is money for the inevitable recovery. That's going to be what his covid performance is judged on.

Why not enlist the help of artificial intelligence to nudge people to mask up?

The Seattle software company RealNetworks has developed an app and data platform that aims to promote mask use and address the safety concerns of businesses, governments and other organizations. Launching today, the app — dubbed MaskCheck — uses AI and a tablet’s camera to detect whether a passer-by is not wearing a mask or wearing one improperly (in particular, by covering the mouth but leaving the nose free to inhale and exhale virus-laden air).

The company is offering the software for free in partnership with the COVID-19 International Research Team, a grass-roots effort by scientists around the world to advance efforts to defeat the pandemic.

Don’t want to tell your customers to mask up? Try using artificial intelligence:
