"...seem profit driven"?? They're public schools!

I doubt someone coming all the way from Bangladesh would be looking for a party school. The OP is inquiring about "the best".

It's prime real estate for an awesome educational experience- lots of culture, people, and random historical sites.
OP is inquiring not only about "the best", but specifically--the best in California.

California has one of the greatest groups of universities in the world located within its borders. You can't go wrong with the entire UC system. The CSU system also has some very highly regarded universities. And of course, you have many private options as well.

The academic quality of the UC system in general is well above that of the CSU's. There are a few select programs in the CSU that are good (e.g., engineering at Cal Poly SLO), but in general, UC's are considered superior to CSU's.

Not that you can't get a good education at CSU, but if the OP is looking for the best schools in CA, they wouldn't be the CSU's.

If you want to study in IT and programming, check the results of programming competitions among universities.

https://icpc.global/worldfinals/results

The best California university was Standford at the 21st place.

UCLA wasn't there at all.
It was the 4th in the regional Socal competition and could go to the finals.

^This. If you're an international student going for tech and computer science.

However, there are many options to explore depending on your talent and what you like to study. If you're into film and art, there are amazing schools outside of California, too. Landscape architecture will likely be a popular degree for the future, and PA has one of the top schools for those as well as Rhode Island (RISD).

Depends on what you're looking for. Go based on major, instead of state. I knew a few foreign students who chose California but had different expectations and the blew lots of money, because they somehow had a different impression of California (plus they were charged a heck of a lot more- and didn't pay for what they got). Just FYI.

Personally, CSUs, you could easily feel like another number. For business school CSUF is great.

Or all of New England. Upstate NY, NYC. California does not have an amazing array of colleges. Stanford, the Claremont Colleges are very good. Berkely and UCLA are the next levels.

Many are impersonal commuter schools.

For some reason, there are loads of religious schools in CA,

Until recently, people from CA sent their kids east for college.

I'd take the State University of NY over California's state schools, which I agree are profit-driven, Some are mediocre.

Get out of your comfort zone and go east. Brave the cold and attend a college with a history and people unlike yourself.

The best university in CA is Cal Tech.

https://www.smh.com.au/world/caltech...02-10p49z.html

"The California Institute of Technology, also known as Caltech, has been named overnight as the world's No.1 university in the Times Higher Education world university rankings."
