Haha Apples and Oranges. Cal Tech only has 2,000 students vs 41,000 at Berkeley and Berkeley also a top 10 b-school, a top 10 law school etc.

If you decide Berkeley do your research. It not all rainbows and unicorns. My daughter was accepted and chose Davis instead. There’s more to it than just rankings.

He could always study in China if that is his goal.

Let's see. As of July 1st California had the #2, 4, 6 and 9th most valuable publicly traded companies in the World. I'm failing to see California as socialist. It seems like a functional democratic capitalist society. If it were socialist you wouldn't have 10s of thousands of homeless people in the major cities and a large portion of society without health care.

You get admitted to Berkeley. Have the grades and test scores and you get ADMITTED to Berkeley.

You get selected to Stanford. Have a daddy or mommy with money and you get SELECTED to Stanford.

If your poor and smart.......Berkeley.

If your stupid and rich.........Stanford.

With all due respect to Stanford it is amazing what they do with sub-par students.

They would be a great University if they ADMITTED rather than SELECTED based on social class and daddy's money.

-- Univ. of California Berkeley
-- Univ. of California Los Angeles
-- Univ. of California Irvine
-- Univ. of California San Diego
-- Univ. of California Davis
-- Univ. of California Santa Barbara
-- Univ. of California San Francisco
-- Univ. of California Santa Cruz
-- Univ. of California Riverside
-- Univ. of California Merced
-- San Jose State University
-- Fresno State University
-- California State University Long Beach
-- California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo
-- California Polytechnic State University Pomona
-- California Institute of Technology (CalTech)
-- Pitzer College
-- Scripps College
-- Occidental College
-- Biola University
-- Chapman University
-- Azusa Pacific University
-- Whittier College
-- University of Redlands
-- Harvey Mudd College
-- Claremont McKenna College
-- Pomona College
-- Claremont Graduate University
-- California Lutheran University
-- Stanford University
-- California Institute of the Arts
-- Mills College
-- Pepperdine University
-- University of Southern California
-- University of San Francisco
-- Loyola Marymount University
-- Salk Institute for Biological Studies
-- Loma Linda University
-- Woodbury University

In addition to the aforementioned mix of public and private universities, we have a good system of State Universities (the CSUs) which offer a pathway into nursing, teaching, administration, etc.

Additionally, the Community College system offers many courses that can lead to certification in one of the trades (HVAC, electrician, fire science, nursing, child care, billing, etc). So, as you can see...plenty of options!

Missing:
Art Center College of Design
Sci-Arc
Otis
UC San Francisco
UC Hastings

UCLA....Not Berkeley, but better than the two above.

Berkeley.....See the three above.

Cal Tech....well, if you cannot get into Cal Tech, there is always Berkeley.
I got into Berkeley. Didn't apply to Stanford but doubt I would have been accepted as I wasn't legacy nor any super amazeballs things on my application. Just standard smart white kid with tons of APs and strong standardized testing.

Stupid kids aren't going to Stanford. My class of 85 kids in a top private school where the vast majority of us had social class and money. We all didn't get into Stanford. Only 6 did (or at least chose to attend, I guess more than that could have been accepted). For reference, 9 went to Harvard.

Stanford and Caltech is apples to oranges. The median student at Caltech are going to be smarter than the median student at Stanford on a standardized test.

But if you're looking to go into Business, Law, Medicine, etc etc there is absolutely no reason to go to Caltech. Or if you want to have sports be an important part of your college experience. If you want to go into Theoretical Physics, Aerospace Engineering, or Chemistry then Caltech is the superior institution.

nope: USC is among the better schools for some studies. Why would I be biased? I didn't go to SC, I went to SDSU way back when.

509: man talk about a strange take on the good and the not so good top schools in CA. How can anyone really not think Stanford isn't one of the top schools in the country, certainly in the state of CA?
