That would be one heck of a house if purchased for that price in 1978.

Property tax in Tarrant County for a $250,000 house is $15,425. Sales tax in San Francisco is 8.5% sales tax in most urban and suburban areas of Texas is 8.25%. Minimum wage is $7.25 in Texas vs $14.00 in California.

I think where you choose to live is very much a personal choice and but unless you are on a real tight budget I don't think that the numbers you provided would make very many people in California want to move to Texas, especially with the high property tax rate. But if you live in Texas and like it, then that's what counts, right?
People with wages $14.00 can't afford to live in SFBA. Just last week young women was asking for help on Nextdoor Santa Crus county. She works on this $14.00 wage, couldn't pay utilities bill, evicted from her old 1 bdrm appartment and lives with her son in her car now. Asking for help if somebody has a room she can rent.

And here is a great house in your Tarrant County:

https://www.redfin.com/TX/Benbrook/1.../home/32372111
$299,500 Price
3 Beds
2.5 Baths
2,682 Sq. Ft.
$112 / Sq. Ft.
built in 1992
Lot Size 9,757 Sq. Ft.
property tax $541 per month

no state income tax

how much house like this will cost to homeowner in SFBA? make your guess

you can look at redfin or zillow to find out what you can by for this money or how much houses cost in areas in California where you can find a good job

Don't know people in our HOA who live in houses that been purchased in 1978 or around. But most everybody was paying a lot of money for new roof, sidings, windows, doors and of course appliences inside house. Big money.

I have no interest in arguing about this. What matters is living where you are happy and if for you that is Texas then that's what counts

And once again the California snobbery raises its head.

Lola, tell us about your experience in Texas and why California is so much better.

California for 50 years

Went to a wedding in Dallas..nearly died from the heat and humidity

Plus the miles and miles of nothing pretty to look at

We own two homes here..one 13 miles from Ocean, beautiful 3000 sq foot with pool..paid for

Vacation home 100 miles away..2200 sq ft on fairway..snow on the mountains, palm trees in our yard

Difference is we can afford this beauty,

Do feel sorry for those who can’t

10 to 15 years ago, less people in California complained compared to today.
For many housing expenses shot up 50%+. $1500 2bd apartments in Socal are now $2200+. $400,000 homes sell for 700,000+. Homes in San bern and riverside used to be cheap but now near half million plus. But wages haven't matched. So ppl pay 50% income on housing compared to recommendation of 30%.

That extra $200 to$ 1000 difference in housing alone in such a short time relative to before and other cities. Over time yes everything goes up, from utilities, groceries, gas, registration and housing. Jobs often compensate for cost of living. But when the most expensive expenses such as housing takes most of your income, it makes the other things more magnified despite being relatively modest.

You live in North Tustin right? The views last week after it rained were phenomenal.
