This news teaser popped up on my screen and reminded me of another part of the country I'll leave to the locals, for two obvious reasons:

What worries some of us is the sketchiness of many people who've embraced the MAGA movement: whacky conspiracy theories, stockpiling of guns, openly racist statements, agitation for ethnic and racial division, openly pushing to destroy the social safety net, repudiation of education and educated people, defiance of health orders...and these are just the tip of the whole MAGA iceburg!


There are whole parts of the country, namely certain states, where not being in the majority religion means you are socially and economically outcast. Most of Utah is that way for non-Mormons, and much of the South is that way for non-Baptists. A lot of counties in Nevada, Idaho, Arizona and Idaho are majority Mormon too. Try being a non-religious, gay, medical professional in a town in Mississippi and tell me how that goes...

California's secularism and strict anti-discrimination laws allow people of belief, and non-belief, to flourish here. There is no pressure to join a particular religion in order to be successful because it will not be tolerated here.

I'm sure there's gay secular doctors in Mississippi. I doubt they wake up every other day to find a cross burning in front of their homes. Some of you have mental images of places like that which come from 1960s newsreels. It's no better than people in the country who may think L.A. is just full of gangbangers and pornographers.

Most people will end up far inland to live in more affordable areas so they will rarely take advantage of the beaches. At that point you may as well move to Arizona or Texas.

We are retired. I live around middle class families that commute and/or work from home.

I just thought of another reason to stay here.... In another thread a woman who is in her 50’s - 10 years younger than her husband on Medicare - needs to move closer to better healthcare.

30 years ago when we moved from Los Angeles to Utah - our healthcare costs were triple what they would become in Utah.

Today? We returned to California to find out that it’s cheaper here in CA than in Utah.

States that don’t expand Medicaid and don’t sign onto the ACA are Waaaaaay more expensive. And there are way fewer choices. Just two major health insurances in the Salt Lake Valley. The dominant IHC - Intermountain Healthcare that says it’s non-profit but it’s not.... and MountainStar which is the only other hospital system there. They are OK but not great.

Utah has dragged itself screaming - not wanting to accept federal monies that make insurance more affordable. Probably because they hate Obama - or something.

Our premiums for my spouse in Utah - in a plan sponsored by my former employer because it was cheaper that way - were almost $550 a month with a huge out of pocket maximum. They would have been more than double that if not for my employer.

Here - he’s on the ACA (California Care) and they are $273.
