I'm looking for a city in California with:

a) Preferable central or northern California.
b) Small - medium size.
c) A nice downtown/main street.
d) House prices in the vicinity of $600K.
e) Good tennis facilities. I play a lot of tennis.

Recommendations?

Doug

Any climate preferences? What's your heat tolerance, for playing tennis?

What size house, for $600K? Would a 3-br. unit in a townhome complex be ok? It's one way to extend your options.

For example,, this, in San Luis Obispo, which has a Country Club w/tennis courts, and a Tennis Society on FB.

Or you could try Paso Robles, which has SFH's in your price range, and a swim-and-tennis club.

How far north in "Northern California" are you willing to go, for affordability? Humboldt County? Lots of small-to-medium sized cities up there, and there's a Humboldt Tennis Club in Arcata, and tennis clubs or public facilities in other towns in the area.

The Sacramento area (suburbs) might work, but it's hot in the summers.

There are a few homes in Morro Bay (SoCal) in your price range, and the city has public tennis courts. But the homes in your range are 2 br. We don't know if you'd be bringing a family with you, or what your space needs are. But Morro Bay has the climate for year-round tennis.

Asphalt, or clay? (Or BOTH?)

Know of no tennis courts constructed of asphalt. Cement, yes! Asphalt is too rough, especially if one were to fall on it. Played on a clay court in Westlake once. That is a whole different game.

^^^ OP would only be able to afford a condo in Santa Cruz, or townhome. Prices have gone through the roof.

Yeah, you're right. I wasn't thinking.

And yes, I agree with you on how clay plays differently than concrete.

Thanks folks. I should have specified concrete tennis courts. There's really no clay tennis courts left in California anyway. They are too expensive to maintain. Was looking for a tennis club with good facilities (like USTA teams), not public courts.

I'm aware of the tennis country club in San Luis Obispo. My partner and I really like SLO. But, that country club is really expensive and you have to be referred by two members. I like large houses and of course my partner likes small cute houses. Let's say single family home, 3bd, 2bath, 1500+ square feet.
