I logged in to the CA DMV website today because I had not received a registration fee renewal notice and I thought it was due sometime in September.

Turns out it was due 6 days ago on September 8th, and now I am being charged a $39 late fee. Is there any way to get this fee forgiven or waived? I genuinely did not receive the notice but I have moved address since last year so it might be that(although all mail should be forwarded to my new address).

The extension was only good from March thru May.

It's iffy if you can get the late fee waived. Generally, you go to the field office and plead that you didn't receive your renewal notice. Having it not be forwarded doesn't work as you're supposed to do a change of address with DMV, either paper or online when you move. However, between Covid and the fires, whoever you talk to at the field office may be lenient and waive the fee.

There is no way to waive the late fee using the online transaction.

I just paid it. Not worth the effort of going to DMV to save $39. Guess I'll just have to set a reminder for next year.

How did you pay it? Online, in the mail, by telephone, or did you go to one of those new DMV Kiosks?
