Walnut Creek has one of the best downtowns of any CA suburb and many times is a national model for how to redevelop inner ring suburban downtowns.

Pasadena also has a really nice and beautiful downtown, similar to WC's.

San Francisco, San Diego, Pasadena, and Santa Barbara are the best bigger cities with downtowns.

San Luis Obispo, Walnut Creek, Carmel, Santa Cruz, Napa, and Davis are the best smaller cities with downtowns.

Pomona and Pleaston have okay downtowns.

That's what I've come to conclude

okay, a bit of a change on the best cities with downtowns.

I think SLO will be a really good downtown if they got Macy's. the city needs it.

Okay, here is my new opinion on the best downtowns:

Best bigger city downtowns:
-1)San Francisco 2)San Diego 3)Santa Barbara 4)Pasadena 5)Napa
Best smaller city downtowns:
-1)Walnut Creek 2)Beverly Hills 3)San Luis Obispo 4)Santa Cruz 5)Davis

And my personal favorite is San Luis Obispo, cause the city is the best out of all them.

How does Ventura have a nice downtown? Besides a couple nice local resturaunts and the old theater, it's run-down and the farther you go down the the downtown the more run-down it gets. Not too much all of the pot-heads from Ventura High School hang out there.

Surprised that no mention of either Los Gatos or Palo Alto.

San Francisco is nice - if you hold your nose and/or ignore the omnipresent odour of urine.

I think downtown Long Beach/Newport is pretty nice for a big downtown

Pasadena is nice for medium size

...downtown Claremont is pretty nice for small

.. downtown Palm Springs is also pretty nice for small

... so is downtown Riverside and the Mission Inn

.. Beverly Hills, West LA and such is a bit too snobby for me :P (no offense).
