Pomona and Pleaston have okay downtowns.

That's what I've come to conclude
POMONA??

guess I have not been there for a while . . . it was great in the 1960's with the downtown open mall and holiday parade every year, last time I checked it had pretty much turned into a dump (IMHO)

When I think "Downtown" I think hustle and bustle of a city, with shopping, restaurants, and congestion. San Francisco would be my favorite downtown and what a downtown is when I think "downtown".

A lot of cities have been mentioned. I thought I'd throw out some obscure ones, instead. The following all have little cute downtowns:

Benicia
Vacaville
Pleasanton
Burlingame

Depends on what you consider 'bad'. True, we don't have any slums necessarily, but I would put the Oceanaire area in a 'bad' category because of all the irritating college students

I now think that

San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Berkley, Burlinghame, San Diego, Palo Alto, Santa Monica, LA, SF, Pasadena, Ventura, Huntington Beach, and Malibu have the best downtowns. At least by college-aged and the younger generations it would be considered the best downtowns. They have night life, are close to the beach, and have college aged stores and trendy stores in their downtowns.
