Which cities in California have the best downtown? Small cities? Big cities?

I like San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, Davis, Napa, and Santa Barbara small downtowns. I like San Francisco and San Diego big downtowns.

Old Town Pasadena
Montrose in the La Crescenta-La Canada area

Visalia has a very nice, walkable downtown with good restaurants.

I second Visalia.

They are now seeing 2nd and 3rd floors of the downtown buildings being converted into housing.

I like Davis, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel, Napa, Sausalito, Walnut Creek, Pleasanton, and Chico for smaller towns. San Francisco, and San Diego for the big.

Downtown Millbrae is great, I love it there. Sixteen Mile House is where I go on special occasions when I really need to treat myself and my SO to a great meal..

I think my town has the best downtown

A market, lumberyard, hardware store, a gas station, a saloon, a post office, a town hall, 2 churches, a few residences, a mexican restaurant, a fire station, a beauty salon, a couple of historic buildings, a candle/gift store and 2 real estate offices. All commuter friendly. If you had good knees, you could crawl from one end to the other

I have to nominate Glendale as one of the better downtowns in California -- lots of shopping, plenty of restaurants and bars, much residential within walking distance, and several office towers -- a very complete, and unpretentious downtown.
