Hey Moddy,

Just an FYI, as you pointed out Sacramento Metro (2.5 million population ) is more than twice the size of the Fresno Metro (1.1 million), consider this:

All of the Sacramento neighborhoods I am listing not only border the City of Sacramento but they all have Sacramento addresses as well. (except for West Sacramento). For example if you live in these Sacramento neighborhoods: La Riviera or Florin or Rosemont or Arden-Arcade you are NOT counted in City of Sacramento population but your address is "Sacramento".

Sacramento City (510,931) + West Sacramento City (54,328) + Arden-Arcade (100,548) + the other Seven Sacramento neighborhoods (112,000) that border city limits of Sacramento and are contiguous with Sacramento. Sacramento "city" essentially has 777,259 population

The city of West Sacramento borders the city of Sacramento. Only the Sacramento River separates the two with three bridges connecting the two cities. Essentially, they are one city. Likewise, Arden-Arcade is a part of Sacramento that is continuous with the city, but not actually incorporated but all the Arden-Arcade neighborhoods have Sacramento address, essentially the same city. And so on... with seven other Sacramento neighborhoods. I didn't even count all of the other communities in Sacramento County such as Carmichael because it borders Arden-Arcade and it does not have a Sacramento address.

Oakland City (433,697) + Piedmont (11,453) + City of Alameda (122,580) + Berkeley (81,312) + Albany (18,937) Emeryville (12, 298) = 680,259 population. Piedmont, I believe, is completely surrounded by the city of Oakland. Berkeley, Albany, and Alameda Oakland all are dense and urban, like one contiguous city. Only the Oakland harbor separates Oakland and Alameda.

Fresno City = 545,769 population

Does the community/city/neighborhood actually border the larger city; is it contiguous with it; and/or do they share the same city name in their address... such as these neighbors: Rosemont, La Riviera, Parkway, Fruitridge, Arden, Arcade, Florin all have a Sacramento address but they are not counted in the city population.

Regarding, towns/cities in the San Joaquin Valley, I like Lodi, and Merced.

In the Sacramento Valley, I like Woodland and Chico.

Sacs metro size is gigantic tho, not the best comparison. You should probably use urban area when comparing Fresno and Sac.

Hi, chim

Edit: you don't like Visalia, chim? Visalia is a good step above Merced in my opinion, but Merced will be leap frogging it soon because of the UC. Visalia is the Chico(minus uni.) Of the SJV to me.

Hey there don'tbelievehim,

That's what I just did in my above post....is compare the three urban areas of Fresno, Sacramento, and Oakland.

The Sacramento urban area is unique in that 593,801 folks live in the urban contiguous area of the City of Sacramento, but they are not incorporated into the City of Sacramento nor into their own incorporated cities so they are sort of left out. That's a huge number to be left out. There is no other large metro like this in California, nor in the USA with such a large unincorporated population, with such a large PERCENT of its metro-urban population not counted in its largest incorporated city, nor in it's largest other incorporated cities.

I could have included Carmichael and Fair Oaks, in the Sacramento "City-Urban" population because they are contiguous with the urban area of Sacramento-city, but I didn't count them because their borders are not actually with the city limits of Sacramento and these folks do not have a Sacramento address; for example, in my analysis Carmiachel is not counted in the Sacramento City-urban population but Rosemont is counted in that 777,259 number. Both communities are in Sacramento County, both are not in the city limits of Sacramento City, and therefore not officially counted in Sacramento City population. But I counted Rosemont in the Sacramento City population because if you live in Rosemont, your address is Sacramento, CA, not "Rosemont, CA"; however, If you live in Carmichael or Fair Oaks or Orangevale, your address is Carmichael, CA or Fair Oaks, CA or Orangevale, CA, respectively, not "Sacramento, CA", so I didn't count those.

Most Metros, you can take the largest incorporated city plus the contiguous incorporated surrounding cities and come up with a urban area population, but not with Sacramento, you have to add in the many unincorporated communities that are contiguous with the urban area, and that's what I did with Sacramento, yet I'm still selling Sacramento short, by not including communities like Carmiachel, Fair Oaks, and Orangevale. I also left out communities that are incorporated like Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove and Folsom, all are contiguous with the Sacramento urban area, but since they are incorporated cities and do not have a Sacramento, CA address I did not include them in the 777,259 number.

I've been meaning to check-out Visalia more, I've been there just a few times. :-)

Stockton
Modesto
Visalia
Merced
Chico
El Centro
Redding
Yuba City
Madera
Hanford

Are these cities all similar? Are they uniquely different from one another?

Which ones are safe, impressive and clean? Which ones are run down or have high crime?

Which ones are more progressive or normal? Which ones are more backwards?

Which ones are the most podunk?

Which ones are the most scenic? The least scenic?

Which ones are the best for employment opportunities? The worst?

Would you live in any of these areas?
El Centro here!
El Centro is similar to the Cities mentioned above
in the sense that they are agriculture based and are flat.

HOWEVER.

The cities in the central valley tend to be shrouded in smog all the time, and are fare from any MAJOR city.
The smog doesn't really let you enjoy the sierras.

In El Centro, we have bad particulate matter, but we also have plenty of clear days, mainly because we get more winds, we are surrounded by mountains.
We have more recreational areas
(Borrego Springs, Ocotillo Wells, Glamis, Hiking, Flower feilds, Hot Springs etc...)
We also border Mexicali, a city of 1 million, so we can cross and eat tacos, and visit big city amenities.

We are also close to the Same Diego Metro and L.A, aswell as palm springs, mount Laguna, and Big Bear areas.

Central valley mainly just has Yosemite and Sequoia Ntl Parks which are a ways away.

El Centro is cheaper and is growing fast. El Centro is also improving its image and modernizing more.

It's been requested numerous times. They don't feel it needs to have its own subsection but it covers more square miles than Sacramento, and even LA. It's a massive amount of land with numerous cities involved but .. oh well

Strange. CA has twice the population of FL, but FL has more Sub Forums than CA.
