I'm not affluent, but I'm well above average, with expensive tastes. Solana Beach is nice, but next-door Del Mar is older, nicer, and sounds better at a cocktail party. Also, I live there (as a renter - I can't afford to buy). So that is my vote for #1. Working my way up the coast, I'd also pick out Laguna Beach, Santa Barbara, Carmel, parts of Santa Cruz, Marin County, Piedmont/Lamorinda, and the Sonoma/Napa wine country. I'd pass on Newport Beach - too commercial, except in the tiny Corona del Mar area.
