Hi, I'm in SoHum and was looking for a fixer in Fortuna. Will be looking again if anything else affordable & actually fixable comes up. Looked at 2 different fixers within a 1/3 mile of each other in the airport area- N & S of School St. Both were heavily, & I mean heavily infested with rats. Is this a thing in the southern part of Fortuna? Or is it all over? Or spotted throughout? Also how is Eureka for rat infested neighborhoods?

&, Uhmmm.... are cockroaches rampant in any neighborhoods? I want to know what I might be getting into..

Rats seem to vary from year to year wherever you are. If a house is infested its because the residents are stupid, or lazy, or just not diligent at eradication. You cant leave food out for.your pets all the time. Seal all entry points. Keep your traps set all the time.
If you move into a serious infestation there is one way I have heard to get instant results.
Catch one live. While you have it caged give it a serious, gruesome, painful but not fatal injury. An example would be burning off a leg with a propane torch. Now release it back to its comnunity.
Word is that the whole population will leave the area and not return until they are replaced with younger generations.
Ive been a rat killer for years, never tried it but it makes sense. They are intelligent,, communicate, and learn.

Some suggest cats, most I have seen are far too lazy if well fed. Those that will hunt are amazingly sadistic.

RE in Fortuna is so cheap, do you really need to get a fixer? Also, be aware that much of Fortuna floods if there's a sudden spring snow melt-off in the mountains. Look for high ground, or look in the smaller towns in the area (up-river?), that may be on high ground. Ferndale has a hilly area, but I don't think Ferndale is as cheap as Fortuna. Maybe an RE agent who knows the area could help point you toward where to look.

That is barbaric, I hate rats, but torture is not needed. Anyone who takes a propane torch to a live animal is seriously sadistic.

Are you from the Bay area? Prices have increased dramatically in the past year. Many people are moving out of the area because they can't afford to live here anymore.

I can't do that.. People that do things like that end up doing it to people as well. IDK who told you that or if they've ever done it, but I'd suggest staying the hell away from that person if they have.

So I guess the rats are throughout and if I do buy there I'd better make sure I can access everything to seal holes. Eew.

Alternatively, you could create a continuous loop audio track of some of Yoko Ono's finest material.
Yeah, I know, that's pretty damned sick too.

Lol, Yeah, that is sick. That would drive anyone out well before the rats.. Mongolian heavy metal works pretty well on bears (the Hu), and also on my wanna be gangsta teenage neighbors when they get too loud, but I'm betting the rats would just get more edgy.

Pepper spray works. I occasionally have rats in my shed. Door won't always shut tight on a metal shed. I use gloves, put some bear spray on a rag and wipe a bit underneath the shed. They leave. They're something like 5 times more sensitive to pepper spray than humans.

I could keep them out potentially, but working on a house with massive amounts of rat poop just grosses me out too much. Call me fussy.

That might work, but it would more than likely drive the op away as well. I know it would drive me away screaming in agony
