Interesting article since a lot of people on here have wondered what Faulconer would have done differently.

Pandemic Exit Interviews: Gavin Newsom opponent Kevin Faulconer on what he'd have done differently

Newsom's most high-profile opponent to this point is former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican who termed out of office in December. Faulconer governed as a moderate, working with Democrats on homelessness and climate change mitigation initiatives, among other policy issues.

On the pandemic, Faulconer encouraged mask wearing and physical distancing while opening up outdoor spaces for businesses to operate. He was sharply critical of Newsom's mandated business closures, first ramping up his public criticisms of the governor during the winter surge and stay-at-home order........

As we get to the other side of this, there will still be many issues that Californians care deeply about that Sacramento and the governor failed at solving. I've talked about schools already, but homelessness is the really big one. It grows by double digits across the state each year, but I took aggressive action in San Diego and we were the only big city in the state that saw a double digit reduction in homelessness in the two years before the pandemic.

Looking forward to Governor Faulconer.

But watch, the Newsombots will come here with the same garbage conspiracy theories about all who oppose him being right wing nut jobs, Trumpers, QAnon etc. This is because neither he nor his supporters have any facts or data to support his policies.

Given that we're talking about a deadly pandemic that killed hundreds of hundreds of thousands of lives, it's tasteless and tacky and cringeworthy to criticize a governor who only sought to preserve human life. Gavin Newsom deserves our thanks.

If only the nightmare that was Donald Trump and his idiot, fanatic worshippers had taken this as seriously as Gavin Newsom, no doubt far fewer people would have died.

All leaders are judged on how well they handled a crisis, there is nothing "tasteless, tacky or cringeworthy" about that. He did a pretty mediocre job based on the metrics so not sure why you think he shouldn't be scrutinized for it. On top of that CA has one of the highest unemployment rates and ranks near dead last in getting kids back in the classroom.

That is President Donald Trump to you.

And Gavin Newsome deserves nothing more than to be dragged out of his office and tarred and feathered for his crimes and horrendous mishandling of this entire fiasco. He is a piece of human garbage that never should have been elected to begin with. It is only now that the recall is going thru that he is allowing things to start opening back up because he knows he went WAY to far with his nazi lockdowns and abused his power far too much. May he burn in hell.

Anyways, seems like Faulconer would have taken a more balanced approach based on what he said compared to Newsom.

Faulconer is a nobody who achieved nothing, before this nobody outside SD even knew who he was. Everyone knew who Newsome was when he was done being Mayor of SF, ditto for Villaregosa. When you are mayor of the second largest city in CA and no one knows who the f*** you are, you suck arse. Period.

That being said, that might not be enough to prevent Newsome from losing. While Newsom's attempt to preserve life is admirable, he has come across as a total kook. Some of that can be blamed on Trump for throwing Governors into a role that should have been handled by the Feds.

But Newsom's French restaurant debacle might cost him. It showed that he is everything that people say is wrong with Bay Area political leadership. The elitism, arrogance, and hypocrisy turned even Democrats like me off. I'm not sure what putting Faulconer in would achieve. He would just spar with the legislature, which has a super majority of Democrats and would likely be a purely symbolic Republican victory...reeking of opportunism during a crisis.

I will say that it's easier being interviewed when it's shoulda, woulda, coulda...who knows what actually would have happened if he was governor.

However, he's right about failing completely when it comes to homelessness. Not sure if it's a Democratic thing or just the people currently in office but it was become much worse under Newsom and in So. Cal., Garcetti. We have a homeless issue here in Northern Nevada and proactive steps are being taken to address it. But it's not as bad as CA (it's real bad!) partially because we're much smaller and partially because we have cold winters which makes the area less desirable.

The other issue mentioned about Newsom is his inability to keep businesses from leaving CA. Doesn't seem to care. The flight of businesses and retirees has had a direct and favorable impact on Northern Nevada's economy.

The Democratic machine in CA has produced some not so great politicians lately which is why I was against Harris being VP (I highly preferred Duckworth but we won't get into it in this thread...). Because of the Democratic majority, some of the candidates are almost anointed like Newsom and Harris. I feel like they have not "paid their dues" and had the red carpet laid out for them.

Often times, it's the Peter Principle..."man (and woman) rises to their level of incompetence"...

I think that's mainly because of Newsom's granstanding handing out gay marriage licenses. Aside from that what would he have been known for outside of SF?

I don't think attracting attention is a good way to measure how good a leader is at all, especially if its for the wrong reasons. San Diego isn't a city that gets much national attention outside of being a vacation destination anyways. SF and LA dominate headlines no matter who the mayor is.
